FUNDRAISING became a close shave for one Thamesmead man who agreed to help a multiple sclerosis charity.

Mario Gouder, of Broadwater Road, had not had a haircut for eight years but agreed to have his golden locks chopped off.

And he is expected to raise more than £1,000 for the Bexley and Dartford branch of the Multiple Sclerosis Society.

More than 100 people arrived to witness the haircut which took place in the Rose and Crown, in Plumstead High Street, Plumstead.

Kathleen Reeve, of Riverdale Road, in Erith, was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis two years ago, and she persuaded Mario to have the cut and raise money for the charity.

She said: He was supposed to have a number two cut.

Then he asked everyone to put an extra pound in the jug to have all of his hair shaved off.

It raised another £60!
