Hundreds of villagers turned out at a meeting this morning to voice their concerns about the axing of an Abbots Langley bus service.
Even though the meeting was arranged at short notice by Watford and Abbots Langley MP Claire Ward with bosses from Metroline, residents packed out Henderson Hall in High Street to fight to save the 318 service – which is due to be stopped in February.
Residents say the distinctive red buses provide a vital lifeline for many residents linking Abbots Langley, with Watford town centre.
Ms Ward said: “I am over-whelmed by the turn out today. I am delighted to see so many of you here indicative of just how important this bus service is to the people of Abbots Langley.
“Everyone I speak to tells me just how great the bus service is and how great the drivers are. Today we are here to discuss with Metroline how the service is run and if we can find a way to fund it and keep it running.”
Operating company Metroline announced last month that it is to cut its 346 and 318 services because of the ‘increasingly uncertain economic climate’.
The announcement prompted County Councillor Paul Goggins to start a petition to get the decision reversed - to date around 500 signatures from the village have been presented to Metroline’s chief executive.
Speaking at this morning's meeting Metroline's West Area Manager Stephen Harris said: "We would not be here if there wasn't a small glimmer that we could save the bus service. We will look at every opportunity to keep the service going."
Residents repeatedly expressed their gratitude for a service which they say is 'reliable and frequent'.
Ms Ward added: “There is a clear strong message from villagers - that the current Metroline service is fantastic and that we want it to be continued.
“There are four local authorities that can be approached to see if they can give any assistance. I hope the figures will be looked at again so we can keep this service.”
