Nine-man Watford suffer 2-1 defeat to Cardiff City thanks to injury-time goal by Aron Gunnarsson

Watford suffered an agonising 2-1 defeat to Cardiff City as Aron Gunnarsson’s injury-time header meant the Hornets’ gutsy display when down to nine men counted for nothing.

The Hornets played well during the contest and went into the break ahead when Tommie Hoban, who was handed his professional debut by Cardiff boss Malky Mackay, bundled home from a corner.

The second half, and ultimately the result, was heavily influenced by the two red cards given to Watford players Daniel Pudil and Nathaniel Chalobah.

Pudil was first to be dismissed when he was adjudged to have slapped Craig Noone in the face in an off-the-ball incident just after the hour mark.

Cardiff were then awarded a harsh penalty when a powerful strike from Noone hit the arm of Jonathan Hogg from point-blank range, with Peter Whittingham converting the spot kick.

A minute later and Watford were down to nine men as Nathaniel Chalobah received a second yellow card for kicking the ball away.

The Welsh side had a series of half chances but Watford had very good opportunities of their own before Gunnarsson headed in the winner in the first minute of injury time. Watford were facing a side who have now won all six of their home games this season and not lost a league game at Cardiff City Stadium since March.

The Hornets away form has been good this season and they were hoping to secure their fourth win in five matches.

Watford made three changes to the team which started against Peterborough United on Saturday; with Mark Yeates, Matej Vydra and Alex Geijo coming in for Almen Abdi, Fernando Forestieri and Troy Deeney.

Cardiff, whose coaching staff and playing squad has significant links with the Hornets, also made three alterations. Ben Turner replaced Kevin McNaughton, Craig Bellamy was in for Craig Conway and Aron Gunnarsson made way for Craig Noone.

There was nothing of note to report in the opening ten minutes and when the first opportunity did arise, former Hornet Tommy Smith’s volley from 18 yards was straight at Manuel Almunia.

Cardiff did have a penalty appeal turned down soon after as Marco Cassetti may have nudged Bellamy over in the box as the pair chased Peter Whittingham’s through ball.

The home side had edged it in terms of possession but it was Watford who went close to taking the lead when Geijo won possession deep into Cardiff’s half and slipped in Vydra. The forward’s touch allowed Mark Hudson to make a recovery challenge and the deflected shot was tipped wide by David Marshall.

Watford did go ahead midway through the half though when Cassetti headed goalwards from Yeates’ corner and Hoban bundled the ball home from close range.

Just as the chants of ‘Malky, what’s the score?’ could be heard from the away end, Cardiff almost equalised as a few former Hornets linked up. Smith picked out the run of Helguson and Cowie, who beat the offside trap but could only volley into the side-netting from eight yards out.

Smith was one of the Bluebirds’ biggest threats and Manuel Almunia needed two attempts to gather his cross after the wideman beat two defenders to reach the byline.

It was a balanced contest and Watford were finding space in dangerous areas. Turner did well to block Vydra’s effort from 20 yards.

The home crowd felt they were on the wrong side of a couple of offside decisions. In one instance Bellamy was through one-on-one but Almunia saved his poke at goal regardless.

When Bellamy finally did beat the offside trap wide on the right, he wasted his low cross and gave those in the box no hope of reaching his delivery.

Watford were counter-attacking well and Turner again needed to make a last-ditch block as Hogg struck from 18 yards out. The resulting corner saw Pudil smash his volley comfortably over the bar.

Cardiff enjoyed more possession than their opponents early into the second half but a tame Noone effort, which went over the bar, was all they had to show for the opening ten minutes of the half.

For all of Cardiff’s possession, however, it was Watford who went extremely close to extending their lead – twice in quick succession. The Hornets broke with pace and Geijo created enough space 20 yards from goal to shoot and force Marshall into a good stop. The resulting corner wasn’t cleared and Hall turned inside the box and hit the crossbar with his shot.

The home side quickly found themselves up the other end and Almunia needed to tip Noone’s header over the bar.

The dynamics of the game changed when Pudil was adjudged to have struck Noone in the face after the pair clashed following an aerial challenge and the Czech Republic international was given a straight red card.

Cardiff laid siege on Watford’s goal and created a host of half chances, but Watford still created a few good opportunities of their own.

Helguson headed wide from close range, Smith had a goal-bound shot blocked and there were countless number of wayward crosses sent into the box.

Cardiff finally grabbed the equaliser when Noone cut into the box and struck a powerful shot which was heading goalwards before it struck the arm of Hogg, which did not move as he went to block the shot from point-blank range. Whittingham smashed the penalty straight down the middle of the goal.

A minute later and Watford’s task was made even harder when Chalobah was given a second yellow card, for what referee Mark Haywood adjudged to be kicking the ball away.

Helguson had the ball in the net soon after Chalobah’s dismissal, but the whistle had already gone.

Watford didn’t just settle for a draw though and did look to counter-attack when possible. Substitute Ikechi Anya ran half the length of the pitch before he crossed for Deeney, who headed over the bar.

But Cardiff were certainly the team in the ascendency as the clock ran down. Almunia saved well from Whittingham’s free kick, Matt Connolly stabbed over the bar from close range, Smith had a tame effort saved and Cowie dragged wide after a goalmouth scramble.

There was wave after wave of Cardiff attacks but the Hornets were not content just to sit back and defend their lead, they still looked for a winner.

They could have scored when slick play and a bit of fortune resulted in Yeates being free eight yards from goal. He ignored Doyley in the middle of the box to try his luck from the tight angle and Marshall saved.

But it was Cardiff who grabbed the winner in the first minute of injury time as Noone picked out Gunnarsson and he headed powerfully past Almunia into the bottom corner.

That wasn’t the end of the drama though and Watford searched for an equaliser despite being down to nine men.

One period of Watford pressure almost resulted in Noone scoring after the visitors threw everyone forward, with the winger shooting wide.

There was to be one last chance for the Hornets deep into injury time when Anya picked out Hogg unmarked in the box but the midfielder’s half volley went comfortably over.

Just got back from the game. Not the prettiest game, but the effort and bravery shown by the boys was outstanding. Thought that Hall was immense, organising the defence, and Thompson did well when he came on too. Vydra looked off the pace though, and he never goes for a header. Special mention for Geijo, he looked handy, taking the ball down, running at defenders and found Vydra often.

Though Pudil was unlucky, it was handbags really, but right infront of the assistant so always dangerous. Chalobah is just young, a fine yes, maximum possible?! harsh.

4 loanees sent off already! Albeit one wrongly!

Such a shame as it reads like we deserved something!

Anya sounds like he made quite an impact and Geijo too!

Seems Yeats has not done anything to endear himself to the faithful by ignoring Lloyd,! My bet is it wasn't glory hunting, he probably looked up and saw who it was! Does not justify it though!

Really unlucky, the referee was definitely a homer missing lots of holding by cardiff c/hs during first half. Vydra was just coming into the game when he was subbed strange. Then the two sendings off Pudil was retaliation apparently just happened to be in front of Lino, Chalobah was unlucky for a start his first booking Whittingham had already lost his footing, second he just got frustrated and the ref was very quick with the card. Penalty, how can anybody get out of the way of a shot that hits a hand is beyond me. One size and Tommie were immense. On that showing none of the Horns rejects would get in the current team.

Penalty was harsh.
Chalobah sending off was harsh, as he hardly kicked the ball as it rolled.
However the action left the referee no option.
Shame, as it looked like it would be an away win....

Listened to it on 3CR. Gutted - particularly as we should have won it if it hadn't been for another outbreak of indiscipline. What's the score on Eustace. We really need his leadership back on the pitch - talking to players.

Just got back. Got a free ticket to get in courtesy of the club not using their complimentarys up, they were giving away free tickets at the away end, so Cardiff you can stick your 32 smackers up Malky backside .....

First half we looked comfortable, second half we sat too deep and didn't attack, then bizarrely he took Vydra off and brought on Anya and we sat even deeper. Didn't see Pudil Red but that sat us even deeper still. Penalty was blasted at Hogg point blank - harsh as he was protecting himself. Second Yellow for Chalobah was harsh, McPie ran off the bench to remonstrate with the ref who couldn't get card out quick enough. One of the things Yeates did do well was to then have a right go at Malky !

In the end the defence was magnificent, they mustve defended 50/60 crosses, but added time was a step too far .... Even though we had a couple chances to win it.

If we'd kept 11 men we would of at least got a point, if we'd attacked 2nd half we'd have probably won. Strange choice starting Yeates !!!! Abdi keeps ball better. Our 3 centre midfielders Hogg, Yeates and surprisingly Chalobah were not at their best tonight.

Hope Zola and the team learn from this .. Not too disappointed, we just need to be in Top 10 by January, Top 6 by Feb .... Don't peak too early, Cardiff will blow out again on this showing ....

Almunia - 9
Hoban - 9
Hall - 9
Doyley - 9
Cassetti - 7
Pudil - 6
Hogg - 5
Yeates -5
Chalobah -5
Geijo - 8
Vydra - 7

Deeney -7
Anya -8
Thompson -8

Zola - 6

McPie - 4 (Christmas is coming and Malky's getting FAT TER)

Sorry but that really sucks da big one. I’m sitting here in the comfort of my home seething but at least I haven’t had to make a long journey to Cardiff and back to Watford, having been let down by the ill-discipline of 2 more club players. GZ has got to get a grip on discipline in the club and do it now. How many more points will we lose like this? Feel sorry for the travelling fans, I heard you loudly all the way from South Africa – well done! And to the other, more disciplined players that stayed on the pitch, well done too. You really battled hard and deserve credit. NOW COME ON GZ, GET A GRIP ON YOUR PLAYERS.

Can't help thinking that maybe some of these refs have a bias view to our army of foreign players being play actors, the spanish/italian stage is know for dramaics and I think we are losin out on bookings and fouls because of this. As pointed out the Cardiff defence was all over our players but not a card or foul was shown when it should hve been. Yes we need to e smarter in our own dicipline to rid the tag but it goes both ways. As for the penalty what is the guy spposed to do cut his arms off, no way was that a penalty. And Malky remember you only won because your team was plaing against 9 men and the refwas on your side clearly!

Before the game a 2.1 defeat would not have been so bad, However, the time has come for Zola to sort himself out and the team out.

Before the game, picking Yeates as a starter??? I am sure the man should not even make the bench and his performance last night has done nothing to change that view.

Two more red cards, Pudil for slapping Noone, a total lack of discipline by a player who is collecting too many cards. He needs to be fined and understand we need him on the pitch.
Chalobah, a young man who needlessly kicked a ball away because he was annoyed with an unfair and harsh decision by the referee. We lose a penalty and then a man. A wonderful reaction that doubled the hurt.

Zola, now is the time to avoid red cards, stop telling us how good other teams are and to start picking up points.

We imploded and gave Malky an early Christmas present.

I think there may be some bias creeping in against our foreign legion (as Corbindallas says), and it's frustrating to lose so many players (and points) to sendings off. However, I don't think we can accuse the players of mass indiscipline just yet. Living in Australia I have had to base my views on Watford Player highlights and 3CR commentary, but accepting that, if you look at the 4 recent dismissals: Forestrieri's was harsh (he arguably slipped), Vydra's was rescinded, and while there is no real knowledge of what Pudil did, it seems that Chalobah's was harsh also.

I would also observe that comments like Chris's "we need to start picking up points" seem a little bit of an overreaction - based on the form guide, we are sitting in 8th position. For me, a gutsy defeat when down to 9 men, against a team unbeaten at home since March is not too distressing. I like the way we are progressing, and can't wait to get back to the Vic to see the boys in the flesh when I make my pilgrimage in January! Keep the faith, and COYH!!

Ref's first game at Championship level...he should obviously get back to officiating the likes of Luton in non league.

For once we didn't hear McPie whingeing about red cards or dodgy pens. Funny that.

And Andrew Taylor's demands for Chalobah to be sent off (screaming at ref while waving two fingers around to show it was a second yellow) were pitiful for a pro.

Once again a ref out to prove himself at this level and against Watford they have cost us the game. There is no question that against MBoro and Cardiff we would have got a lot more and I believe 6 points. All credit to McPie for acknowledging the Watford fans at the end of the end game before he saluted the Cardiff fans and also the man hug to Doyle. Not sure if he would have done that if we had won. On Sat we need to put out our strongest squad irrespective of many games in short spaces.

A gutter of a result especially as we let Cardiff back into the game because of ill discipline!
Yep Zola has to pull ALL the players aside to talk about lack of discipline without taking the passion out of them!
The two sendings off were for stupidness as they were reactions to a situation rather then a dangerous challenge!
You can't blame the loan signings that have been sent off recently as they have been our best players by far!
Vydra got his rescinded and maybe the club will appeal Pudils?
I can understand Zola changing things around as there are a lot of games but I can't understand that Yeates gets in ahead of Murray and Abdi!
And for the chap that slated me because of my opinion that Yeates isn't good enough.... "Do you still think he is quality?" No he never has been!

I agree. Let's not go overboard about lack of discipline. The uncomfortable fact is that there are some awful refs out there and they do discriminate. What can Zola do?

Maybe it's our job as fans to write again to the league and demand experienced professionals. What's that email address again?

Firstly a gutsy perofmance for 9-men and could and maybe should of won it or got a point, also how anyone can say that it wasn't a penalty are stupid! His arm is raised above his head, yes it was only a reaction, but his arms should be behind his back, also would you have been annoyed if Cardiff had done that and then referee hadn't give a penalty ? I think not.

Chalobah's sending off was stupid, we were down to 10 men and everyone knows that when you are on a yellow, you don't kick the ball away, plain stupidity.

Would love to comment on Pudil's but cannot find any footage of it, but it sounds like Pudil pinned him down after a tackle the guy reacted, which resulted in handbags and then Pudil 'raised an arm' which I think is quite harsh but also as a professional you cannot react this way, as there is only one result.

Onwards and Upwards controlled the game, even with 9 men we were still threat enough for them getting 11 men behind the ball.

COYH!

Actually got to go to a game for once as it was on my doorstep...

Thought we were unfortunate and Cardiff didn't give me any reason to believe they'll continue to be up there at the end of the season. Having said that, we've got some stuff to address.

Thought Cassetti was awful. As soon as he and LD swapped over, we scored. Yeates just never looked interested in the game. Just plodded around without creating any space for anyone. And the introduction of Anya (a 4-4-2 winger at best) was the bizarrest decision on the night, and that includes the red cards.

Pudil was stupid for raising his hands. Chalobah is inexperienced, although I thought his first card could easily have been a red.

On the plus side, Hall and Hoban were very good, Doyley reliable as ever, Hoog was busy, Vydra worked hard with little to show and Geijo held the ball up very well. Thompson also put in a useful cameo which will have done his chances of starting at the weekend no harm.

Overall, frustrating. A win with 11 men. A draw with 10. Same old story with 9...

Collecting my thoughts after last night.
Firstly, feel gutted and deflated.
Secondly, we obviously set up to play this game as 'contain and destroy' in the first half at least, sort of style the Italians call Padlock, and it was working we had the silenced the ,Cardiff were not looking seriously threatening and the front two of Geijo and Vydra were creating chances mainly from long clearences out of defence, which should of been put away, Vydra guilty of taking one touch too many ( gone of the boil a bit) but ran selflessly the whole time he was on.Geijo looked more mobile and was gaining confidence as the match went on , I think he will be a good un!
I'm sure Zola would of stayed with this and then after seventy mins brought
FF and TD for the front two and AA for Yates and really had a go .Cardiff were nothing special last night and were there for the taking.
The first sending off put paid to that, and that's why I'm **** off, the second sending off just compounded it.
Losing it in injury time , after all that work is heart breaking .

For everyone saying we are been fairly treated and we need to get more disipline... Forestieri gets a yellow for encroaching... can anyone name the last player in the world to be booked for that.. He then got booked for diving... which was an obvious slip... an even if it was a dive, when was the last time Suarez was booked for diving...

Vydra's red card... I will say no more as i got into hot water regarding my comments on that f**k**g t**t p***k ref!

An last night the bloke was falling over when Chalobah tackled him... so how thats a foul i do not know.

And Pudil was sent off for a reaction, now how come the Cardiff player was'nt sent off for provoking the reaction.. (which was to hold Pudil round the neck by the way)

Im going to bet my house, my caravan and my van that Abdi gets sent off on saturday as he's the last man standing!

When was the last time the ref's were looked into recieving pay offs.... Not saying it has happened and i have no eveidince, but from what i have seen this season something is deffinatly funny....

Yes we need to e smarter in our own dicipline to rid the tag but it goes both ways. As for the penalty what is the guy spposed to do cut his arms off, no way was that a penalty. And Malky remember you only won because your team was plaing against 9 men and the refwas on your side clearly!
Corby I nearly liked you for a minute! Good post though man. For once we agree!

The ref was desperate for Cardiff to get back into game at any cost . Very badly treated by this Homer! As for tickets think myself and others that had to pay extra £13 on the night should be reimbursed by club! Unless you got lucky with free players ticket!
Plus my dog ate your pukka pies I had wrapped up for you as Xmas pressies.

Went last night and still haven't calmed down. Lack of discpline maybe but that ref wasn't poor but downright corrupt. I was also cheesed off with team selection. Last night was crying out for Abdi and our little Messi. If Cardiff are the best in this league, wecan go up THIS year as I feel we have real class, IF we play our best players. Wouldn't play Cassetti or Yeats again - just my opinion.

My parents went last night...my mum said the ref was one of the worst she had seen, the chelsea lad was silly but how often do people get away with it?against posh on sat we won a thro, there bloke didnt give us the ball and the rolled it 10 yards in the other direction...he did'nt get booked, if pudil was held round the throat then thats a staight red aswell, who remembers thd brighton player shoving neuton in the face?only a booking and neuton got one aswell!in 3/4 home games opposition players have clearly dived...not a single booking! is it any wonder people are asking questions about the officials?yes our players may have been foolish but it seems were the only ones getting punished

Another appalling refereeing display from a first - time homer!! One day a requirement will be that ref's will have played the game.....I know it's a revolutionary thought!
Loads of effort and Cardiff were rubbish and made to look it. Geijo is coming on, and may well be a real player.

Luton because you say things too often it does not make them fact.

Sending Offs:
Vydra...a mistake the ref got it wrong..we appealed and card was rescinded
Fernando...slipped?? he had been slipping for that game and the previous game. wrong studs? not changed=negligence. We did not appeal because the replay looked like a dive.
Pudil slapped the Cardiff player...automatic red card. Cardiff player apparently gripped his throat whilst in a tangle almost impossible for the referee to see. We will not appeal it because we know Pudil was stupid.

As for Chelaboh a daft second yellow he kicked the ball away..it was yellow and two yellows equal a red.Again if there was an appeal we would not exercise our right.

As for the penalty very harsh but if I followed Posh I would have thought Saturdays penalty was harsh. The refs make mistakes but are no worse than in previous years

We have to take the rough with the smooth and of the four red cards one was wrong. This is not sitting on the fence it is removing the yellow tinted glasses.

As for those who claim we are persecuted LOL, I can live with that, better that we have moved from being favourites for a relegation
place each year.

Chris the vic - i understand what you have written but seems like your coming from what you have read in reports and have not been to any of the above games except the Vydra sending off when everyone in the world apart from Mr Rusden saw nothing. Fernando was getting the @@@@ kicked out of him at Huddesfield and staying on his feet when he could he scored ....surely you saw the kicking he was getting after he released the ball to Yeats ? At Charlton it was a very wet night and again he got a kicking and won around 4 free kicks...He then slipped twice before the incident and watching it live it did look like a slip. Watching it on tv did not look good but he never appealled for a penalty just layed there face in grass. Mike Dean knew he made a mistake as 2nd half in that game he gave us nearly every decision....Thats shows a ref he knew he was wrong. Pudil was wrong but again it was handbags and either both should have gone or both yellow cards. Cheloboah is a young lad and kicking the ball away like he did was the action of a young player...any ref worth their sort would have know he had a yellow and pulled him aside and said do i have to send you off for that ? Do not do it again and warned him....but no we had a jumped up hitler who couldnt wait to get his card out. We would never have held for a point as the ref was determind that something would happen their way.
Not yellow glasses just facts from watching live not reading reports.

I admit I naturally assume the ref is rubbish/biased in Watford games, that comes from many many years of watching Watford.
We do get the odd decision like home to Posh, but those instances are the exception that proves the rule.
Surely it's not too much to ask to get a fair rub of the green, when Watford are away there is often a homer ref, can't remember many homers at home though!
The boss needs to make our players more cute at not getting silly bookings that can cost us points.
I'm sure there are dirtier teams out there who don't get the cards Watford get.
