Watford CEO Scott Duxbury targets 15,000 crowd at Vicarage Road every week

Watford's chief executive hopes the club can raise the average attendance at Vicarage Road this season to around 15,000 – an increase of more than 3,000 compared to the number who currently watch the Hornets regularly.

The Golden Boys’ average attendance in the Championship this season, prior to Saturday, was 11,700 but CEO Scott Duxbury is confident that figure can be increased significantly, after a crowd of almost 16,000 was recorded against Peterborough United at the weekend.

The game was a ‘Family Day’ fixture, with tickets costing £10 for adults and £1 for Under-16s.

Saturday’s crowd has provided Duxbury with optimism and he is hoping a couple of new initiatives will help raise the club’s average attendance in the future.

Duxbury said: “We would like 15,000 fans every Saturday. I appreciate that different times for games, such as being on Sky, will always have an effect.

“But for the traditional 3pm games on a Saturday, I would like to be getting 15,000 regularly.

“That would then give us the platform to build the East Stand and we can then look at trying to get 20,000/25,000 when the team are where we want it to be.

“But I really think there is a strong 15,000 attendance here that we can achieve week-in week-out. I don’t think that is an unrealistic expectation and the stats on Saturday proved it.”

When asked about a rough time-scale for such improvements, Duxbury replied: “I think it can be a lot shorter than that [two to five years]. It is about creating the right price plan and being successful.”

Duxbury stated the current attendances are “where we thought they should be” and said he has been impressed with the club’s supporters so far, adding “they are really educated when it comes to football and they are patient”.

Watford have launched two new ticket schemes in the past week which they hope will increase attendances.

One is reducing adult tickets for the November 6 clash with Millwall to £19, or £24 in the Upper Rous, if tickets are purchased in advance of the game.

The second offer is £40 for two adult and two under-16 tickets in the Family Stand for the next five home games.

Duxbury stated that if the £40 offer proves successful then it will be used for the rest of the season.

He said: “It is two-fold; we want to get the next generation of young fans here before the Arsenals and Chelseas take them and we want to start filling the stadium.

“I think one of the first things I said when I came to the club is that we will build the new East Stand as soon as we have the demand for it. We can’t just do it as an ego purchase.

“We want this stadium full week-in week-out and then it will be an absolute necessity that we build the East Stand.

“So we are trying the new initiatives, we are trying to build a team that is attractive and we want to make sure people are not financially priced out.

“The season ticket will always be the best value way to see the team but we understand that certain fans can’t commit to all season.

“So we are trying to create a price point that will ensure games like Saturday are full every week.”

Watford’s average attendance during the Premier League season of 2006/07 was just short of 19,000 so Duxbury claims the club does have the supporters needed to reach the figures.

He believes Zola’s style of football will encourage fans to return to Vicarage Road.

Duxbury said: “You have to remember we are in the entertainment business.

“People are going to turn up and want to be entertained and I think that is what Gianfranco’s team are doing.

“I think it really helped on Saturday that people saw the kind of football we can play.

“If that continues, if we can play attractive football and are successful in this division, which I believe we will be, then I think that, along with the combination of our new family-priced package, should see us increase attendances quickly.

“There are a lot of Watford fans out there but not all of them turn up. So we are trying to encourage them to come back and watch the team.

“Attendances in the Premier League were significantly higher than this, so the fan base is there, we just need them to come back.”

The aim is to get to the PL asap so how does the east stand qualify as as ego purchase? .... get it built and take a bath on admission prices if need be but a full stadium is imperative. Like it or not this is a fashion business and new fans will not be seen in worn out garb.
In Zola you have a top designer, give him a worthy catwalk!!!

Sounds like some common sense, reducing the prices for the Millwall game and £40 for a family makes it affordable.

Shame that crook Ken Bates isn't taking note - £34 for a ticket for Leeds away.

Cash turnstiles, even if it's just a couple, would go a long way too, as long as away-sell-out games aren't included i.e. Leeds or Millwall.

Fair play to the club for reducing those prices for the family stand, would be good to have people in the high street offering tickets for that or the next game, creating a bit of a buzz, maybe having a few give-aways for the family end in the Harlequin?

Pretty sure John Lewis would gladly have a couple of hours aside for some kid-friendly competitions on a Saturday morning, if it helps them sell a few shirts.

I think the priorities are all wrong here. For me, to get a full stadium week after week you need a stadium that is complete. It's not just the East stand, the SW corner still needs to be finished as well. Finishing the stadium should've been one of the Pozzo's top priorities but this is the first time I have heard any of the new regime speak about it. I think potential fans are put off by what remains of the East Stand and as long as it remains unfinished we will always struggle to be taken seriously as a promotion contender.

Get to the cup semi -final or final and the fans really come out of the woodwork!

Didn't we have 37,000 at Wembley for the play-off final v Bolton? I think these are decent enough initiatives. I think people will come along and watch if the good football continues, but it would be folly to build the East Stand now with average attendances as they are - especially if Pozzos are doing a feasability study into a possible new stadium.

Also in the Premier league we sold as many Season tickets as the club were allowed to. Not all Watford fans just people wanting to watch top fight football, the same has happened at QRP & Reading.

What comes first, the chicken or the egg !?

Given our financial status and the mess the new regime inherited, this is a sensible approach ...

If we build a new stand but compromise the team then we will have an empty stand !

It's all about balance

A few months back we were heading for Admin, then we would of fire sold the squad. We have financial security, kept most of our best players and added quality in abundance. The manager is learning, squad developing, the stand (or I would prefer a new cardiffesque new ground) will come as a bi-product of the team doing well and gates growing, standard business acumen !

Of course, if any negative nellys want to build the stand now, and will put up the cash, I am sure we'd all love you to come forwards

COYH

btw, anyone going to 82/83 reunion tonight ? See you there :-)

The easiest way to get more bums on seats is to bring back cash turnstiles. There must be lots of watford fans who can't be bothered to queue to buy a ticket or order online.

Hey Holly, I'm no negative Nelly but my own sense tell's me that we are destined for the PL sooner rather than later so the need is genuine. I realise it won't get filled too often at this level at the current rates but once we are recognised by the media as the best and most entertaining team around it won't take long before we are attracting more and more new fans every game. The area can support a lot more than ever before, we just have to lose the unfasionable team tag.

In total agreement, many do not have internet. Bad enough getting in queue at turnstile but must be far faster than messing about at a ticket office surely.

My dad used to go to every home game but as soon as they got rid of cash turnstiles he stop going, said it was just to much hassle. His two brothers stopped going as well for the same reason.

Cash turnstiles, unreserved seating & atmosphere.

Build the new stand we'll be up in Prem soon

Holly we're not in danger of compromise. The Pozzos have money. It's not players or ground improvements. It's a case of when not if. Build soon, or have thousands of fans unable to get in.

I am a Negative Nelly (I think) but feel it would be madness to build now. The Field of Dreams mantra, 'Build it and they will come,' in this instance surely refers to a team, not a stand. And while Duxbury's promotional ideas are fine, he wants to go carefully about making the offers too attractive or he'll start to alienate existing season-ticket holders, many of whom renewed out of respect for what was achieved last season, long before the Pozzo revolution took place. Next week's Fans Forum will hopefully be revealing - let's hope there are no mysterious 'chest infections' this time!

Spot on, maybe add affordability during austerity for those that football is considered a luxury.

Quite simple. Give the Vic End complete to the away. Some will fill it some wont. Get the East built and give it to the families. It don't need to be big and flash just a simple stand.

I for one won't be sitting with my six year old son playing happy families with Millwall and Leeds next to me in the family bit. Can't think of another club that puts its family bit next to the away! Is it because we are a family club?

Totally agree with PMJ1966. We used to sit in the 'family end' but i couldnt stand the awful language and abuse by the mindless idiot you get following the away team. Lost it one game and would have killed the wolves prat if i wasnt held back. That was the end for me, we now sit in the rookery...a million times better.

The families deserve better than to be sat next to away 'fans' with all that swearing and abuse.

sort it out watford

Cannot believe you Luddites going on about cash turnstiles. It would be completely impractical to return to cash turnstiles, where would you then sit, the seats are numbered and allocated to ticket holders, you would also have away fans sitting with home fans increasing the risk of trouble. Do we really want to return to the dark old days of the fifties and sixties, no we don't. How difficult is it to purchase a ticket online, not difficult at all, this is 2012 for pete's sake not 1964.
