Kelly Smith scored a hat-trick as Arsenal Ladies booked their place in the Champions League quarter-finals with an enthralling 4-3 victory over Potsdam on Wednesday night.

Arsenal went into the match in Germany 2-1 up on aggregate after a successful first leg in London, before Smith's treble and a goal from Ellen White secured the Gunners' passage into the next round.

The Watford-born striker, who recently turned 34, opened the scoring just before the half hour mark and added her second seven minutes later to make it 2-0 at half time.

Potsdam drew level on the night through Antonia Goransson and Keelin Winters but Smith then grabbed her, and Arsenal's third to reestablish control.

Goransson scored her second of the game to give Potsdam hope before White sealed the victory late on.

The win marked Arsenal's first defeat of German opposition in the club’s 25-year history.
