Watford go down to Vicarage Road defeat against Hull City
5:02pm Saturday 8th December 2012 in Sport By Anthony Matthews, Group Sports Editor
Tigers end Hornets' unbeaten run
Watford’s seven-match unbeaten run is over after Hull City underlined why they are also at the right end of the table by claiming a 2-1 win at Vicarage Road this afternoon.
The Hornets created very little during a disappointing first-half display and went behind four minutes before the break when David Meyler headed in after a Corry Evans shot had rebounded off the crossbar.
There was a better tempo about the hosts' play after the break and they suggested they might get something out of the game, particularly after substitute Almen Abdi had hit the post.
But within minutes of escaping at one end, Hull doubled their lead when Robbie Brady struck a fine curling free-kick into the net off the underside of the woodwork.
Nathaniel Chalobah did have a close-range effort cleared off the line as the Hornets tried to mount a late rally and they were at least given something to smile about in time added on when Troy Deeney continued his purple patch by scoring his seventh goal in six consecutive matches.
As with last weekend’s 4-1 win over Barnsley, Gianfranco Zola made just the one change and again it was up front, with Matej Vydra getting the nod to partner fellow joint top scorer Deeney. However, on this occasion the change was enforced as Fernando Forestieri was ruled out through injury.
There was better injury news among the substitutes, with Abdi returning to a match-day squad following his four-game absence after sustaining a dislocated shoulder in the 6-1 victory at Leeds United.
It was the visitors who had the first sight of an opening in the fourth minute when Jay Simpson threatened to get on the end of Robert Koren’s low centre from the right but Joel Ekstrand made the block..
Moments later, a poor clearance by the Hornets keeper was latched on to by Simpson but his shot from the edge of the area was blocked by Fitz Hall and then Stephen Quinn dragged a shot wide of Almunia’s right-hand post from 18 yards.
Watford didn’t do anything of real note in the opening 14 minutes but they almost created their first opening when Marco Cassetti hit a cross-field ball to Mark Yeates who in turn tried to slide Deeney in down the left side of the area but he was tight to the by-line when he got the ball and no chance was forthcoming.
The hosts won their first corner three minutes later and after Yeates’ set piece from the left was headed away to the edge of the area, Chalobah’s strike was deflected behind for another corner which came to nothing.
The Hornets continued to try and lift their game as the midway point of the half approached, albeit some of their passing continued to be not as crisp and accurate as it could be, before Hull were forced into a change in the 27th minute when Jack Hobbs replaced the injured Paul McShane.
Hull had the next semblance of an opening two minutes later when Meyler crossed deep beyond the far post from the right but Koren was unable to direct his attempted volley on goal.
The Solvenian was on target with his next effort soon after when the Hornets had been unable to clear Hull’s first corner of the afternoon but Almunia comfortably gathered the right-footed strike from around 16 yards.
Another chance came the visitors’ way in the 35th minute when Ahmed Elmohamady’s cross from the right was met by Brady but the Manchester United loanee couldn’t keep his effort beneath the bar.
The winger also fired over from outside the area four minutes later after a neat exchange with Quinn down the left but Watford were to be undone soon after.
The opportunity arose when Evans received the ball on the right side of the area and rifled in a shot that beat Almunia and cannoned back off the frame of the goal and Meyler was in the right place to head back past the Hornets keeper to give Hull a 1-0 lead.
The Hornets could have few complaints at trailing at the interval after a relatively flat opening 45 minutes in which their play lacked tempo and fluency.
Zola’s response to falling behind was to make a change at the interval, with Ikechi Anya replacing Ekstrand, meaning Cassetti moved to the right of the three centre-halves.
Watford had only mustered one attempt in the first half; their second arrived within 40 seconds of the restart as Deeney struck a 25-yard right-footed effort wide of David Stockdale’s right-hand post.
However, there was a moment of alarm for the on-loan Fulham keeper in the 49th minute when Yeates whipped in a cross from the left that almost surprised Stockdale at his near post and in catching the ball beneath his bar, he very nearly carried it over his own line.
The in-form Watford midfielder also had his side’s first on-target attempt of the match in the 54th minute, striking a curling 25-yard free-kick that Stockdale had to dive to his right to grasp by his near post.
Brady had his team’s first effort of the second half on the hour-mark when he connected well with a long-range shot but Almunia was always behind it. Soon after though, Cassetti ventured forward and his pass broke for Deeney, who didn’t properly connect with his attempt and Stockdale was easily able to save.
The Tigers keeper was also not to be beaten in the 64th minute when he comfortably dealt with Yeates’ attempted low curler after a Deeney back heel had released him on the left side of the area.
Abdi’s return to first-team action came a minute later when he replaced Daniel Pudil and then James Chester did well to get across the front of Deeney and prevent him cleanly connecting with a diving header following a Cassetti cross.
But Watford were inches away from equalising in the 68th minute when from another cross from the right, this time delivered low by Yeates’ left foot, Abdi arrived at the near post but his close range strike rebounded off the woodwork.
Brady good have no real complaint after he became the first player to be booked two minutes later for a crude hack on Anya. But he more than redeemed himself for that indiscretion three minutes later when, after Hull were awarded a free-kick 25 yards out, the winger curled a superb left-footed effort over the wall and into the net via the underside of the bar to double his side’s account.
Liam Rosenior replaced Koren before play restarted and then Zola made his final change, bringing on Alex Geijo for Hall as the hosts went for it for the last ten minutes.
Brady then made way for Nick Proschwitz but Watford almost gave themselves hope with six minutes remaining when, following a Yeates corner from the left, a Jonathan Hogg scuffed effort broke for Chalobah, who managed to get the ball beyond Stockdale but not Elmohamday, who had stationed himself on the goalline.
Simpson was booked for diving late on and Chalobah sent an ambitious effort wide as the game entered four minutes of stoppage time.
Deeney at least managed to keep his superb goal-scoring run going in the additional time when he gambled on a through ball and slid in to reach it just ahead of Stockdale and ensure his side wouldn’t fail to score for the first time in six matches.
But it was to be too little, too late as the the Hornets fell to their first home defeat in six outings.

Bottom line is that Hull are a very, very good side, best I've seen this season. And, with Chalobah misfiring (as he has been for the last 3-4 weeks) and Yeates constantly giving the ball away (add Cassetti to that today) our midfield didn't compete and we created very little until Abdi came on. Good to see him back he will make a difference, but surely Franco, you have to see that Yeates is simply not good enough and is the point of breakdown far too often. I simply can't see how Batocchio can be sat on the bench while Yeates is on the pitch. He has shown more creativity and accuracy of pass in his short cameos than Yeates has all season...in my humble opinion.

Nobody saw this result coming but we were beaten by a better and more intelligent team. Nevertheless if we learned from it it may yet still be a good result. We are still 6th.

Our midfield out muscled and out witted. Give Battachio and Abdi a run together. Give Bia a go.
Got to agree about Yeates, but what do i know? Missed Fessi today. Oh the team were poor and so were we. Supporters? More like monks

If we are to become a side challenging for promotion I think we need a little tinkering on the transfer front in the centre midfield area to play alongside Abdi.
Also would hope to see Bia given a game over the festive season as we do not have enough quality and pace on the flanks.

BUT!
You cannot win every game. Sometimes these results and performances happen. Every team from Real Madrid to Luton has the odd poor performance.
We have a young squad and a young manager who is learning his trade! These odd poor performances, although not wanted or liked are sometimes a blessing in disguise as it gives the players, manager and coaches the opportunity to learn something new and create a new solution.
I think the next game Chalobah should be rested as he is looking tired. Battocchio and Abdi to get a go. I also think Geijo would benefit from a run of games. I think we should try Mujangi Bia in the right wing back role to see what that offers us.
Lets not forget this is still a relativly new team. If someone had told me at the start of the season that come December we would be in the play offs i would of signed him up as a comedy act.
Lets all have a bad night and then lift our heads high and remember that we arn't actually doing to bad.
I hope everyone that went to the game had a safe journey home.
God Bless

Its also worth poiting out that although Hull played well, the time wasting, diving, faking injury and kicking the ball away was disgusting.
Every opportunity they had to go down they took, they spent 5 years taking a throw or a corner and stayed down for the slightest things. If that had been us we would be hung out to dry.
Again the ref took no action on any of these incidents.
Something was very fishy today... £££
For any idiots reading this, this is not an excuse as we did no play well enough to win. Just an observation.

Vydra performs better as an impact sub against a tiring defence. The odd thing was that when Zola put all his eggs in the attack basket, what was left of the defence still coped quite well, although Hull were sitting back.
At home we need to take the game to the opposition right from the outset. Let's hope the Man City scout was lulled into a false sense of security!

I think Hull are the best team that have come to the Vic so far this season, they looked very solid using the same system as us. I would point out to the people that are criticising Yeates that he has been class for the last few games, I'm not saying he's better than Abdi/Battochio and I agree he should have been subbed today, but for the last few games he's been very impressive. Don't think I could say any player had a particularly good game today with the possible exception of Hoban who looked as reliable as ever. Still in 6th though so can't complain too much, today was just a blip.
If you stand up and show your support your almost made to feel uncomfortable, its like it goes against the grain.
Today was a good example when I felt decent vocal support from the kick off would of made a big difference.
It's quite bizarre that we're challenging for a playoff position yet we wait until the games lost until we start to get behind the lads.

And then Hull did a boring but very efficient job on our midfield and that was that.
Vydra had a poor game but received virtually no service.
We desperately needed a Forestieri to
run at them.
The unbeaten run had to end
sometime just a pity it was today.
I'm sure we will be in or near the top six so no need to panic chaps.

Hats of to Steve Bruce, he got it tactically right today. We passed abysmally, never to feet. Hogg and Yeats were my pick and sorry, but Chalobah looked better when he went back to joint centre half with Cassetti. Tommy Hoban was imense.
Vydra for me only came into the game second half.

I suggest, you should take a reality check before you carry on making remarks about what, has not been stated, (Dyche!).
You remind me of another delusional despot I had the misfortune to grow up with in the 80's. She would not see or listen also!
Do like the despot bit mind, and not once did I mention you, so I return your compliment, it really is not all about you, in fact it's nothing about you.
Anyone that disagrees with him and his regime is either a Bassini lover, fair weather supporter or Zola/pozzo hater.
This along with chris bottoms comments make them sound like football nazis.
However it is a known fact that if you compare someone to Hitler/ the Nazi's, you automatically lose any debate. So that puts that one to bed.
Moving onto important issues, tonights game was naff. Just one of those days where we never got going. Shame because I've had to miss the last few games and I managed to drag a few neutrals along with me; they finally caved after seeing recent results. Fair to say they were certainly not impressed with Yeates' performance, he was rather terrible today. Battochio must have been pulling his hair out.
Oh well, Hull are a good side and we are performing well above expectations so it's not all doom and gloom. Have to say that their approach though (diving's one thing but feigning injury and time wasting with 40 mins to go!) was pathetic. I have never seen that from a championship team and I hope to never again. The pansies are meant to be in the Premiership, not from a team full of 6ft plus Championship brutes. That is all.

I agree Yeates was far from great today but for some reason I still want him to do well for us. I know he's frustrating and gives the ball away but: He does hit a great dead ball (forced a good save from free kick), scored a goal that wasn't given today (goalie carried it over), and hit the post, all on a day when he was poor. And given the amount of assists he's always provided I am going against the grain here, but I think it's stupid and way too easy to write him off. Anyway, it seems Zola agrees with me.

I have given an opinion of what i saw. And here you come again insulting me.
Funny how you will insult me and LD on here yet when we were stood in the Red Lion waiting to meet you, you didnt come say hi!
And dont give the excuse that you didnt know who we were as we both put discriptions on here of what we look like and would be wearing!
F**k me, im even using my real name on here! I cant make it easier for someone to find me at a game!
This point was proven when me and LD were met by a lot of new faces today who recognised our descriptions and came and said hello.
Each and every one of them was sound and it was nice to meet them.
My kast 2 points To the Watford Observer Editor, I have not put anything threatening, aggressive or rude in this post and ask that you dont actually delete this one as they take a long time to right!. Id aslo point out mr editor that i was called a nazi and have the right of reply.
Lat point. Vialli. I think its best you dont comment on my posts again as we are clearly not ever going to get on and it will help with my steroid and blood pressure issues. You had the chance to meet today to talk about our opinions and you didnt take it. I have lost all interest in you as you are like so many others on here and twitter who insult me. Like my good friends Peter and Tyson Fury say.Why worry about someone with no face and name.
I stand by everything in this post and as such will say that on my god daughters life i stand by it. That is a blood oath and anyone that knows me will know id rather die than swear on a blood relative. That how much my honesty in this post means.

Not a total surprise as Hull are a top Championship side.
If we are to become a side challenging for promotion I think we need a little tinkering on the transfer front in the centre midfield area to play alongside Abdi.
Also would hope to see Bia given a game over the festive season as we do not have enough quality and pace on the flanks.
At the moment we can not deliver down the left flank unless Pudil overlaps. His delivery is ok without being devastating, although I rate him overall. Yeates found himself on the left flank for much of yesterday and constantly switched onto his right foot to cross - rarely works !

Agree. Deeney was awesome in comparison to most others. He should get 20 goals this season. Impressive considering he missed the first few games. And Hoban is class.

We were very poor in the first half, slow out of the blocks and Hull did a really good pro job on us. Improved after the break especially when Abdi came on and unlucky not to equalise when he hit post - could've been so different had that gone in...
Interesting to note that after first defeat in 8 the anti-Yeates brigade show up yet again; agreed he didn't have a great game but I actually thought he was the best of a poor central midfield 3 - Hogg well below par and Chabolah's become a passenger with contribution minmal (young lad who needs a rest in my view).
We do seem to struggle at home when teams match our 3-5-2 formation - which obviously works well away, and it was probably the type of game when some FF magic & mystery could've unsettled their well drilled defence.
Still our top-man Abdi is fit again and 3 points next week will get us back on track.

I think we miss Eustace, he's a leader who fires the team up, demands the ball and tries to get things going - looking forward to seeing him in a ball playing team as he's a talented player.
p.s. was sat in line with the Yeates cross in the Rous, and in my opinion it was definitely not a goal. The ball looked to be nowhere near over the line, though the keeper stumbled quite far back over the line so I could understand the appeals (I even appealed myself!)

I don't think it's fair to have this Brit v European comparison when it breaks down, it was a foreigners effort that led to a Brit scoring.

The game was crying out for someone to try and make something happen in the first half - too many players seemed happy to coast. Fair play to Yeates, yes he overdoes things sometimes, but at least he wants to get on the ball and try and make things happen.

There was also another malicious rumour doing the rounds that the game was to be called off due to waterlogged pitch. Someone's obviously on a mission to derail us.
Hopefully he won't be out for to long and it's just a knock. Missed his creativity badly yesterday.

Big deal we lost our first game in ages! Theese things happen and maybe this defeat with be of greater long term benefit to us as it alows Zola and the players to reflect at what went wrong!
I'd rather surrender 3 points today then play like that in the play-offs!
Quite a few of the lads had a bad game today and when that happens you loose! At least we didn't get tonked and we are still 6th!
Lets get a grip and face facts: we are 6th, we have a good squad, a great manager and fantastic owners!
We will win much more games then lose this season and we play great football the majority of the time!
Blaming Yeates too is unfair as he has played well the last 3/4 games, yep I'm not his biggest fan but I ain't slating him coz he doesn't deserve it due to recent form!
Still a long way to go so keep the faith!

I think any play that takes the p155 with timewasting should be made to sit on the bench for as long as the ref deems fit to allow him to return to play, in addition to a booking. Not a sinbin -more a way for the ref to let his team know no one else is going to do that today.

Just waiting for the doom Sayers to rear their ugly heads. We need to be chastised for following this false prophet Zola.
Was just getting the trusty noose out when the championship table come up. We are what? Sixth. Dyche in, Bas back and as Betty Boothroyd said to Churchill, Your drunk Winston. So am I. Tomorrow's another day!

Anyway after the players and supporters saluted each other, the Gillingham supporters started running towards us. LOL and I said i'll never ever drink again. How embarrassing. See you in the club.

That upset me more than the next bit of bad luck, a right hander to my head! Losing your scarf or hat in my case, to the oppo fans was worse than getting a good hiding, it was the equivalent to being scalped!
