Impressive second-half showing fires four-goal Watford to Huddersfield Town win

Watford rewarded the effort of all those who worked so hard to get the game on by producing an impressive second-half performance which was rewarded with the biggest home win of the campaign as Huddersfield Town were thumped 4-0 at Vicarage Road.

Zola’s men were not at their best in the first half but after Troy Deeney had missed an early chance, he struck the crossbar and Matej Vydra’s follow-up was blocked on the line before Deeney put his side in front just before the interval from the penalty spot.

The timing of the goal meant, once again, the Hornets could utilise their counter-attacking strengths after the break if they needed to. But such an approach was not to the fore in the 56th minute when Vydra netted his 15th of the season after getting on the end of a Marco Cassetti cross.

Number 16 was to come in trademark fashion with 16 minutes remaining after impressive hold-up play by Deeney to continue his personal assault on the Championship scoring charts.

But Watford saved their best for last, producing a magnificent one-touch passing move that ended with Cristian Battocchio netting his first goal for the club to complete a resounding second-half performance.

The win moved the Hornets to within four points of second spot, with a game in hand, and gives them a four-point cushion in the play-off zone.

Following yesterday’s heavy snow, the game was given the go ahead following a 9am inspection. Almost 100 volunteers then helped clear the pitch, key stadium areas and the immediate surrounds of the ground so the match could proceed as planned.

There was no surprise that Zola chose to leave his team largely unchanged following last week’s 2-1 win at Middlesbrough, but he was forced into one change. Daniel Pudil was ruled out due to a family illness and so Craig Forsyth came into the side for his first Hornets league start of the season. Fitz Hall had recovered from his hamstring injury and was on the bench.

Huddersfield, who went into the game on the back of a run of 11 league games without a win, also made just the one adjustment to the side that drew 1-1 at home to Birmingham City last week, with Calum Woods replacing Oliver Norwood, who dropped to the bench.

The hosts went straight on the attack from the kick off, with Matej Vydra feeding Almen Abdi to his left. He checked back inside before crossing left-footed but Deeney’s header looped high over the bar.

Following an injury and treatment to Joel Ekstrand, Forsyth had the Hornets’ first on-target effort of the afternoon when his low strike from the edge of the area was comfortably held by keeper Alex Smithies.

The Terriers’ first threatening moment came in the 11th minute when Jermaine Beckford’s pass threatened to release strike partner James Vaughan, but the ball broke for Sean Scannell who struck a first-time effort narrowly wide of Manuel Almunia’s right-hand post.

Within 30 seconds though, a through ball released Deeney who, just as he went to go round Smithies, was clipped from behind. The forward could have gone down but he stayed on his feet, although the challenge had pushed him beyond the edge of the right side of the six-yard box and he was unable to turn his finish back on target.

Huddersfield had their first on-target attempt in the 19th minute when Nathaniel Chalobah was dispossessed in his own area following Cassetti’s throw but Vaughan’s shot on the turn was directly at Almunia.

The game then went through a quiet spell, although Vaughan should have been booked by Scott Duncan for a nasty challenge from behind on Chalobah but the referee, taking charge of his first game at this level, decided a free-kick was sufficient.

The Hornets had seen a number of promising situations let down by the quality of the final ball, although one of these led to Chalobah firing well over, before Scannell played in a superb cross from the left that Vaughan’s head wasn’t too far away from connecting with.

For the most part though, there wasn’t a great deal to warm up both sets of fans as half-time approached, but temperatures were raised significantly in the 39th minute.

Almen Abdi inadvertantlym started it with a back pass that almost sold Almunia short but as the Hornets keeper cleared it, he was clattered into Vaughan. As the referee decided to what punishment to dish out, the Huddersfield striker appeared to have another dig at Almunia, leading to players from both sides getting involved before Duncan eventually showed Vaughan a yellow card.

Apart from Deeney’s early effort, the Hornets hadn’t really threatened Smithies’ goal but they were very close to taking the lead as the opening period drew to a close.

Deeney was unfortunate to see his right-footed curler beat the keeper but not the bar. Battocchio’s follow-up header was blocked and then Vydra’s improvised goal-bound flick was stopped on the line, amid suggestions of handball but nothing was given.

Cassetti then picked up a needless yellow card for dissent but after he had fired wide, Watford did make the breakthrough in first-half injury time.

Vydra had already threatened on a couple of occasions with his runs in and around the box and the next time he broke into the area, he was clearly tripped by Woods. After Huddersfield captain Peter Clarke was booked for protesting, Deeney made no mistake from 12 yards, striking the penalty low to the keeper’s right to put Watford a goal to the good at the break and bring up the scoring half-century for the league campaign.

The Hornets started the second half at a better tempo but they created little until doubling their advantage in the 56th minute.

Cassetti was the creator with a whipped in left-footed cross from the right and Vydra got across his man and stuck out his right leg to divert home his 15th of the season and make it 2-0.

Simon Grayson’s response was to take off Vaughan and replace him with Lee Novak but the hosts could have had a third when they swarmed forward in numbers and Abdi released Vydra, but he fired left footed into the side netting.

Chalobah had gone down with a knock earlier in the half and it wasn’t too much of a surprise when he was replaced by John Eustace in the 61st minute. Moments later though, Jack Hunt played a lovely teasing curling ball down the right channel and it bounced up invitingly for Beckford, allowing him to head it on the run but Almunia showed superb reactions to divert it away.

With the game under control though, the Hornets were starting to purr and Battocchio was the next to chance his arm with a right-footed curler from the edge of the area which went a foot or two over the bar.

Huddersfield then had a reasonable spell of possession, without asking too many questions of the Hornets defence before Zola’s side put the game to bed in the 74th minute.

Deeney was superb with his hold-up play, controlling the ball on his chest and then laying it forward for his strike partner, who was completely tuned into the situation and there wasn’t really too much doubt about what was going to happen next as he beat Smithies low down to make it 3-0.

With another two-goal showing to his name, Vydra was then replaced by Fernando Forestieri, while Scott Arfield came on for Scannell.

Alex Geijo, who replaced Deeney with six minutes remaining, almost scored with his first touch, heading an Abdi cross from the left down and narrowly wide of Smithies’ near post.

But Watford did score a fourth before the end – and it was magnificent in its creation and execution.

The Hornets eased forward with several passes, pulling their opponents all over the place, and the move ended with Forestieri finding Cassetti on the right with a brilliant back-heeled lay-off, who immediately laid it into Battocchio and the Argentine swept the ball across and beyond Smithies to score his first for the club in some style with a genuine Goal of the Season contender.

They might have made it 5-0 in injury-time when Abdi released Geijo on the right side of the box, he pulled the ball back and after Battocchio had tried to chest the ball home, Forestieri was unable to turn it in at the back post.

Great performance all round, scoreline didn't flatter us. Fourth goal was one of the best goals I've ever seen at Vicarage Road, the passing and movement was sensational, and the finish wasn't an easy chance by any means.
Battochio was my man of the match today, ran the show in the middle of the park. Forsyth deputised reliably in my opinion, nothing sensational, but solid defensively and put in some clever crosses (in the first half mainly, fizzled out second half). Vydra was as reliable in front of goal as ever, he hasn't missed more than half a dozen one-on-ones in his time here.
Overall, it's a great time to be a Watford fan, and when we can bring on players like Eustace, Geijo and Forestieri as subs, we know we've got brilliant squad depth. If we can get our home form sorted and continue like we did today, automatic promotion is on the cards.

Really encouraging stuff and it could be a win like this which really secures us in the upper echelons of the table. Our ability to get a result like this taking in mind the conditions has proven a lot of doubters wrong. Vydra has produced the goods again and is really starting to make a case for himself to be appointed club captain. It is now time the other players step up and show through their performances that we are not too reliant on Vydra as many of the critics argue. The only thing that needs working on is the finishing. Yes, I know what your thinking - we scored four goals. But it is worth remembering one was a penalty and that out of seven shots in the first half, only 2 were on target. Whilst it picked up in the second half, I would like to see Zola instil a more ruthless attacking mentality from the off. If we have any serious aspirations to further climb the league ladder, we need to be able to kill teams off early on in games, rather than surrendering the initiative and giving them a chance to score first.

Interesting Forsyth was preferred, I am assuming this is a combination of an impressive Bradford spell and a desire to play a more direct 'British style' game against considerable bigger foe. Still his selection has been justified with a 4-0 result and come monday morning, Pudil may be wondering how he will force his way back into the team.

Great credit also goes to the volunteers who gave up their free time on a weekend to ensure the game could go ahead. Would it be too far to speculate that David Cameron's efforts to mobilise the 'Big Society' is finally paying dividends? Perhaps, but even still, credit to the men, women and children who were out in their numbers to clear the snow and ice.

It really is a great time to be a Watford fan, wonderful football, great goals and a very happy looking squad. There is still a long season ahead but we look ready for any challenge right now. I know that there will be continuing specualtion about GFZ and CFC, and as always for us Watford fans it always seems there is something, somewhere trying to drag us down. My take on it is simply that GFZ was chosen by the Pozzo's with a long term strategy for this club. It is early days but it is also working, and very well. My thoughts are that as much as GFZ is a CFC legend, the treatment by their owner of previous managers may be enough to deter him, as well as many others. In addition and with total respect GFZ has not won some of the silverware that appeals so much to Abramovich and his Magpie love of all things shiny. I think GFZ is here for the long term and we should all enjoy the crest of this wave. I know I am and I hope you are all as well, we have suffered plenty these past few years and now it is our time to shine again. Well done all! Time to play some Chic... Good Times!

Superb second half performance. I have seen some pretty good goals over 35 years at the Vic - today's 4th is up there amongst them. What a brilliant, brilliant goal. When we get it together we are now looking like a very good team indeed. It's a great time to be a Hornet! Loving it.

wonderful performance overall against Graysons cloggers , could not kick us off park although tried , another poor ref who did not do his job as how vaughan stayed on pitch is quite increIdable !!

good words to for forsyth , thought he was sharp , kept his position well helping team keep shape , very good in the air and strong defensively , any coincedence we kept a clean sheet for the first time in ages ? think Pudil has a job on his hands holding his position , he was not missed today

Does vydra have the experience you ask? Perhaps not yet, but if appointed captain he would grow into the role and he is already leaving by example

I'm generally against any forward being captain, but I can see exceptions, RVP at Arsenal and Shearer for example. However, Vydra is not one of them. He is one of our top three best players, but he doesn't instruct and organise in the way a captain should. Eustace, Almunia and Nosworthy are constantly giving out orders to other and generally motivating the team. Furthermore, I'm not even sure if Vydra speaks fluent English, so surely you would want your captain to be able to communicate with everyone quickly and efficiently?

Does vydra have the experience you ask? Perhaps not yet, but if appointed captain he would grow into the role and he is already leaving by example
I'm generally against any forward being captain, but I can see exceptions, RVP at Arsenal and Shearer for example. However, Vydra is not one of them. He is one of our top three best players, but he doesn't instruct and organise in the way a captain should. Eustace, Almunia and Nosworthy are constantly giving out orders to other and generally motivating the team. Furthermore, I'm not even sure if Vydra speaks fluent English, so surely you would want your captain to be able to communicate with everyone quickly and efficiently?
Communication is undoubtably an important trait. Perhaps there is an argument to have one of the Eustace /nosworthy types to lead the side whilst a vydra or pudil are assigned a sort of 'tactical leader' on the pitch to make the more offensive decisions and lead the creative attacking elements of the game. This is a system often utilised by rugby teams where a 'pack leader' heads the forwards and typically epitomises and encapsulates the 'team-spirit' of the side whilst a fly half leads tactical side and typically offers more of an organisational leadership role.

I agree with the idea that there should be leaders in every area of the pitch, Nosworthy/Hall at the back, Eustace/Hogg in the middle and Deeney up front, but I certainly wouldn't say that Vydra is any kind of leader other than leading by his creativity and goal scoring.

Great Afternoon all round

Positives: WFC have found a style that is great to watch and effective. Players like Forsyth, Batocchio and Nosworthy can come in and fit in seamlessly. The 4th goal was a thing of rare beauty. Deeney and Vydra are electric.

Negatives: none, apart from the usual half-time incompetence of the coffee stall in the Upper Rous.

Just hope we get extended highlights tonight on the Football League show.

The only thing I agree with is that we need to take our chances, but it's irrelevant if we keep winning like this.
Have a look at Pudil's twitter feed, he has no worries of getting back in the team, Forsyth was OK but wasted many chances, didn't even get a look in second half as the rest of the team didn't want to lose possession by giving it to him.

Overall, it's a great time to be a Watford fan, and when we can bring on players like Eustace, Geijo and Forestieri as subs, we know we've got brilliant squad depth. If we can get our home form sorted and continue like we did today, automatic promotion is on the cards.

Have you removed your brain? Vydra is certainly an excellent player, but not since under 9's football has the best player been appointed captain. Almunia, Eustace and Nosworthy are our on the pitch leaders and having any of those as captain is ideal.
Pudil's son was in hospital so he couldn't play, Forsyth will be back on the bench at best when Pudil's back, but certainly did himself no harm today.

Whilst alumina has the undoubted required experience, his ability to influence the team from the box is severely constrained, especially when one bears in mind our forward thinking attacking football which will guarantee we assert ourselves in the opposition half. Most of this has already been said but well done to all of the supporters and ground staff who put a shift in to get the game playable. Such a joy to watch Watford at the moment even in freezing conditions. Deeney and Vydra is one of if not the best strike partnerships in the league. I thought Battocchio was first class today but I must say I was very impressed with Cassetti's deliveries (although silly to get a yellow for kicking the ball away). Defence was also great and a nice clean sheet. I can't actually think of anything negative to say apart from we have to wait until next week for the next game... What a great time for Watford fans...

20 years or so watching Watford and that 4th goal is probably the best I've seen. Thought CB was excellent today, full of energy, put some good challenges in too.

Front two are clicking at a perfect time and what a luxury to bring on FF who was clearly told to just have fun!

Cassetti is brilliant when he just strolls over to celebrate. As good as doyley is at defending we have missed the delivery from our full backs in recent years and MC showed his class with another 2 assists.

Looking forward to going to Forrest.

Countless times he had the ball on the wing and crossed in poorly. Pudil was sorely missed as he can defend and attack, Forsyth can't. The proof is in the fact his teammates chose not to pass to him in the second half, most probably instructed by Zola.
I don't appreciate the 'berk' comment, and neither will my good pal LD.

The most heartwarming moment for me was when, after scoring each of his goals, Vydra kissed the Watford badge on his shirt. I take it as a positive sign that Premiership clubs can whistle in the wind, at least until the Summer.

Without any surprises the lead-in commentary made the obligatory mention of the "Udinese loans". Then of course the 4th goal showed only the final passes.
When they then showed the whole move, Claridge (who lets face it was a **** footballer), spoke with sarcasm when it was put to him that this was one of the beeter goals seen at the Vic. "Oh right" was his summary. So glad that my BBC license money is being invested so wisely in peados and nobs who know nothing about football.

I'm 56 next birthday have always been a Watford supporter, hadn't been for a while then got a feeling before last season that something good was going to happen and got a season ticket for the first time. My gut instinct never lets me down!

That's sad mate, I prefer the alternative of administration and obscurity. I'm probably not as young as you think, though wish I were. I go back to the days of Endean and co,and have seen good or bad.
The game has moved on, yes money has spoiled it, but dissing your own team changes nothing.
We have a team of execs or are very much for local roots, look at the long term contracts they have handed out to them. They are investigating ways to integrate further with local teams and schools. No, I'm not making this up, it is fact, one that several other posters could confirm.
GFZ is one of the most decent men to have graced these shores as player or coach, and his style of football is something to behold.
The loans will all settle down in time of that I'm sure.
As for a panda bottle what the Frick is that? I remember Cresta bottles that had a polar bear on it, and coming from a poor family, that was our coke.

I'm maybe even a bit younger than you then. I am honestly glad that people are happy about this and in the short term it will be good for the town.But my opinion is that the souls gone and it won't come back.

Football clubs used to be a club where fans had a stake. I think they are more like racehorses now (In that they belong to rich people who have a transient interest and no responsibility to the fans) I think that is inevitable, but also a shame.

I've fallen out of love with it a bit.

Also think people are bit deluded when it comes to these things.When you look at how Chelsea fans have changed in their quantity and quality it unnerves me.

Now you mention it I do, little plastic bottles! For kids even poorer than me!
No mate, this is very subjective, but the clock ticks forward not backwards, and as with this country on the whole times change, some not for the better.
One thing for sure I have watched our fourth goal from Saturday umpteen times, I can never remember doing that in any era.
So I suggest we are no worse than the rest when it comes to football morals, and we should all get behind our home town team, for that is something that never changes.

Has anyone mentioned Smithies (their keeper) getting pelted with snowballs from the Rookery whilst having a warm up before the second half, allowing one to squirm through his grasp, waving his arms around blaming the snowball throwing kids then booting the ball onto the underside of the Rookery roof. I think he was going to boot it into the Rookery but thought better of it at the last second. Still job done anyway made himself look like a complete plank and carried on his "butterfingers" themed display with a definite assist for Vydra's first. Comedy gold!!!
