Watford head coach Gianfranco Zola credits 'mature' performance in Huddersfield Town victory
6:23pm Saturday 19th January 2013 in Sport By Anthony Matthews, Group Sports Editor
Gianfranco Zola was delighted Watford were able to reward the efforts of those who helped clear the Vicarage Road pitch and surrounds of snow earlier this morning with a 4-0 victory over Huddersfield Town.
Speaking after the win, the Hornets head coach said: “I just found out that this morning, more than 100 supporters turned up here to help clear the pitch of the snow so I think they’ve been gifted with this performance and they deserved it.”
The Hornets had to wait until first-half injury-time to make the breakthrough when Troy Deeney scored a penalty after Matej Vydra had been fouled by Calum Woods. But once Vydra turned in Marco Cassetti’s cross 11 minutes after the restart there was never much doubt about the outcome.
The in-form Czech international then scored his eighth in his last four Watford league starts and 16th of the season after excellent hold-up play by Deeney. The hosts saved their best for last though, when a memorable one-touch length-of-the-pitch passing move ended with Cristian Battocchio netting his first for the club.
Zola said: “I think we’ve played some better games than this but it was a mature game. The result is a little bit too hard towards Huddersfield because in the first half they made it very, very difficult for us, so we had to work hard. I think the goal towards the end [of the first half] helped the team a lot because we then, in the second half, managed to play the football that we want to play. They had to open up a little bit more.
“But it was mature because, as I said, playing at home and playing away is a completely different thing and we need to learn to do better when we play home. We know what we need to do when we are away from home, at home we need to improve and today’s performance was excellent in terms of this.”

Huddersfield worked hard in the first half, were outclassed by the mid point of the second half and had by then resembled a team of cloggers.
Vydra 1 on 1 - un-erring. What a finisher.

Nice quote from Grayson in Yorkshire Post.
Grayson though, was full of praise for the quality of the Hornets’ fourth goal, adding “Watford certainly got into their stride and I suppose if anybody watches the fourth goal they’ll see what a great goal it was. If that was in the Premiership, it would be applauded by a lot of people.”

I look at the fixture list and if we can win the next three games I really think we could be second before Feb comes along!
We have so much depth and quality in our squad and I can't remember when was the last time I could say that?
We had no Pudil, Hall, Hoban, Neuton or Hogg today and Geijo, Eustace and Forestieri were on the bench and Murray and Bauban are nowhere to be seen! WFC has changed for the better so quickly and I feel so excited of what the future could hold!
I really hope the club sign Pudil, Geijo, Abdi, Vydra and Ekstrand before the month is out as that would be a sign of real intent and show all our rivals that we really mean business and are not just loaning players!

A great afternoon, 2 more clinical finishes but Vydra, now 8 in his last 4 games, too many good displays to mention.
If we win our game in and we can be within 1 point of an automatic place, something that looked a very tough task before Christmas.
I look at the fixture list and do not see where we will droppings on our current form. Fancy us to be in that 2nd spot before we return to The Vic in a fortnight.
Well done lads.

We probably just witnessed the best ball play leading to that fourth goal ever witnessed in a yellow shirt (brazil included). It had everything, one touch accurate passing, dummies, brilliant finish.

However, after such a brilliant result how annoyed was I to see Zola linked with Chelsea and even having to underline his focus on the job at Watford. Was that part of the script that Judas and the treacherous Scot both read from. Hopefully GFZ will realise that working for Italians is a lot better and safer than a guy who has sacked more managers than he has had hot breakfasts.
As for signing most of the loanees lets wait for promotion when they will be desperate to sign.

vydra and eskstrand were not even in the udinese team and even now would be unlikely to get in their side. All these players that came to us came on the provision they waned to come here and if watford wanted them they would sign. End of story.

Got to disagree with Oliver Phillips writing in the Watford Observer about the passing style. "It can become a cop out, pass the ball and it is no longer your responsibility". In my experience players looking to avoid responsibility tend to kick the ball up in the air in a vaguely forward direction. I'll settle for the passing cop out if there's going to be a cop out.

The beauty is this team/squad is possibly the best we've had since mid 80s yet the majority would not get near to the udinese current side.
Maybe in this window and certainly if we go up there will be even bigger better names to follow.

Have not seen one bad suggestion. I think a young fit Fitz hall might have been another Mclleland. We've seen some talent. One before my time? Cliff Holton
finally, Pat Jennings. Now that's a keeper I wouldn't mind having in ANY side.

Then bang confined to reserves for having the cheek of actually playing football in his team. That was as mad as his tactic of kicking to touch at restarts. Was I watching Watford or Sarries?
