Watford attempt to sign Manchester City's Jeremy Helan on permanent deal

Picture: Action Images Picture: Action Images

Watford are in talks with Manchester City over the permanent signing of left-sided player Jeremy Helan.

Helan played four games on loan at Shrewsbury Town earlier this season before starting 11 times for Sheffield Wednesday during two months at the Championship strugglers.

The Frenchman’s loan expired after last weekend’s 0-0 draw with Wolverhampton Wanderers and Dave Jones is keen to resign the 20-year-old, but fears he will lose him to Watford, who want to sign Helan permanently.

Helan , who can play at left back or on the left side of midfield, made his Manchester City debut as a late substitute in the Capital One Cup defeat to Aston Villa in September.

Speaking to BBC Radio Sheffield today, Jones said: “We wait for the Jeremy Helan decision. Watford have come in and want to buy him. So we are still waiting on that decision.”

Jones continued: “He came in and did well. We are disappointed that someone else has come in but at this moment in time, we cannot match what they are offering.

“It is a case of seeing if the deal falls through. If it does then we have a good chance of getting him but if it doesn’t, then we move on to somebody else.”

Magic words from Jones that Sheffield Wednesday cannot match what Watford are offering!

We used to sit at the bottom of the championship food chain but now we can compete with the biggest!

Only concern is that this may alienate pudil who seems very close to vydra

If you read the old BBC reports, he was being tracked by City, United etc. Touted as the new Evra in France.

A lot of potential so fits the Pozzo model perfectly....

He was corted at the age of 15 by Man Utd and Everton. You can't be a bad player to have offers like that.

He ran his contract down at Rennes and joined the famous Man City acadamy.

Big, Tall, Powerfull, More Pace Than Anya, Good Crosser, Score's Goal's.

And we are beating our rivals in terms of financial ability and ambition.

Mr Pozzo, will you marry me..

He will replace Franchone and Dickinson so be a back-up to Pudil, not a replacement.

Pudil loves it here.

Haven't seen much of him, but it's good that we're getting some cover for Pudil. Feel a bit sorry for Craig Forsyth though, who I thought did quite well against Huddersfield. If we sign Helan, I reckon Forsyth will go out somewhere on loan, if not permanently.

More importantly as he signed for Man City in Feb 2009 and not 21 until May 2013 he will be classed as a home grown player per Football League rules as he would have had 3 years in UK football before his 21st birthday.

Just spoken with a Sheff Wed season ticket holding colleague.

He started off as left back but was then played more in the left midfield as his defending was seen as being 'slightly dodgy'. Very fast. He wishes Wednesday were keeping him permanently.

Finally, he was the player recently booked twice and wasn't sent off in a match.

One of those bookings was for diving - so sounds like he will fit right in! (only joking)

I suspect that City will not retain a twenty year old unless they feel he will challenge for a first team place in a year or two. And look at the big money earners ahead of him. An ordinary Premiership player will not be good enough.
Given regular games this lad will be a top quality player at Championship level---and will develop into a decent Premiership player---Mariappa, Danny Graham level.
(This is, in effect, what I have heard from some fairly knowledgable City supporting relatives. I know---! I send them food parcels and sympathy cards). It's another Pozzo investment in the future.

Mostly because City don't have a need for a youth team anymore when then can buy a team that can win a league for half a billion from the Abu-Dhabi petty cash haha they would probably spend more on lunch that what they would value Helan at, which is in no means bad for us.:P

No disrespect, but our bar has now risen. Would Forsyth be a Prem player? The policy will be to identify young raw talent, to hone, contribute and sell at peak. That's the model whether we like it or not. I like it very much so far

If he has so much potential why are City letting him go? I hope Forsyth stays - he gives 100% and I reckon will improve again under Zola.
Got to say though the last few games our defence has looked very mean! Best I've seen for a long time
He does seem a good player, and could give Pudil some proper cover, but if we do go up this season (which is starting to look more likely by the week) I don't think he will be premier league standard just yet. Our defense in the past few week has been awesome, its good to see all the players starting to gel and hopefully we can get Pudil, Vydra, Abdi, Neuton, Ekstrand, and hopefully another goal keeper (the only position i think we need to strengthen slightly)
