First published in Sport

Gianfranco Zola praised Watford’s strike partnership of Troy Deeney and Matej Vydra after the duo scored all three goals during the Hornets’ 3-0 victory over Nottingham Forest.

“They combine very well, tThey really have an excellent understanding,” Zola said. “When you see the first two goals, it shows they work for each other and they display a very good sign of understanding.”

Vydra has now scored ten goals in his last five league starts and when Zola was asked about his display, he replied: “I am delighted with his performance. I also thought Troy Deeney was exceptional today again.

“The point is that whilst the two strikers have been fantastic in front of the goal, I think from the manager’s point of view they have been even better in the way they work for the team; helping all the time.

“If you see their movements, they are always dropping into midfield to make it difficult for the opposition to find spaces. That makes a difference for the team.”

On Watford’s performance as a whole, Zola added: “It looked very good to me too. It was a tough game. I think you look at the result and might have thought it was easy but it wasn’t.

“What made a difference was the attitude and the performances of my players today. It was a top performance. It won’t be easy for anybody to come here and win the way we did today.”

It's really good to see a proper strike partnership, there's so few these days. We have to go back to the 80's for a strike partnership as good as these two. The difference this time is that Vydra and Deeney really work really hard for the team and chase back. We are fortunate to be witnessing a potent partnership, I just hope the players also realise how rare it is these days and we manage to keep them together for longer.

Wonderful stuff!! The days of Barnes and Blisset, Reilly and Johnston are returning!! I think it is still quite hard for us to accept just what a wonderful season this has been so far, we have true leadership who understand both the business and footballing side of the game, a humble, wonderful manager and a team that really does seem to be enjoying itself. Great times indeed!

Vydra and Deeney are just so good together and its just so good to have quality on the bench too!
Our bench of Geijo, Forestieri, Hall, Hogg, Yates and Eustace proberbly the best bench in the Championship this season!
That's without Neuton, Murray, Mugi Bai etc etc!
I hope the board can pull it out of the bag and get Abdi, Vydra, Ekstrand and Pudil signed up on permanent deals as they are quality players and have transformed our team so much!

I do expect some of these changes at Bristol , but some are still harping on about Charlton , I personally dont think we lost to Charlton because of the changes we made that day. It was a bad day at the office and even the best do lose sometimes and the players that came in contributed to all of our three goals. The fact we all know is we have the biggest and strongest squad in the championship, so there are times when we should utilize this and rest some of the guys for the potentially tougher games we have coming up soon. Now if we do make changes on Tuesday and we get beat I am expecting you all to hammer me Royaly.

Nope, win or lose on Tuesday I agree with you. We have this squad we should use it. Why else sign FF on a 5+ year deal if all he is going to do is sit on the bench.

We really are a force now and they have gelled completely. The striking partnership is there but with some good plan b's ready to use if one of them get's suspended or injured. An excellent team. But it's all subjective isn't it - McCleish's summary was "I didn't think Watford were extra special - just that we were very poor on the day". Yeah right - if it makes you happy!

I don't think he will make more than one or two changes. 2 Clean sheets on the trot so don't mess with the defence (Nos and Doyley certainly won't need a rest anyway). Strikers are on fire so don't rest them (you surely don't rest a player who as scored 10 in 5 starts!). Maybe a couple of changes in Midfield - Pudil and Battochio should be fresh so I reckon maybe Anya for Cassetti; and Hogg for Chalobah. Vydra, Deeney and Abdi to be subbed if all going well in 2nd half to keep them fresh for Bolton.

Two games with clean sheets and six points yet the day spoilt by the events at Norwich.

Maybe Zola would grant them a friendly so we can put them in their place and start educating Duxbury in how to fill the Vic.

Completely disagree. Why change an invincible team? It has taken 5 months for the right team to emerge. Why mess it up? May be if it was a Carling Cup match but we're trying to get into the Premiership! furthermore, if Vydra doesn't play I will be worried that it is because he's about to be transferred.

Interesting that opposing managers are starting to make excuses for their teams after we batter them. I think the real reason is that we are playing superbly well at the moment and we are the better team Mr McLeish!

McLeish said that we were "nothing special". He and I were watching different games then! Our movement, especially Vydra and Deeney, caused them problems all afternoon. We were by far a better team than Forest and I suspect he knows it. He made excuses at Villa too. If I were a Forest fan I would be so unimpressed with ths managerial appointment. A shame that he couldn't give credit where credit's due. Anyway, who cares...we're on such a roll! On to Bristol....you orrnnns!

Sorry Keith could not disagree with you more , we are in hot form NEVER change a winning team , Zola "rested" deeney and Vydra vs Charlton a massive mistake , forgiven now but to make same mistake would be unforgivable , Bristol City have a new manager , a very good and clever manager in my opinion in o' driscoll , who has his first home win , will want another , Great to have such a good squad and if it does catch up with us during game then YES bring on fresh legs, but if i was deeney or Vydra I would want to be playing all the time at the minute , every thing they touch seems to turn to gold at the minute .

LEAVE THE FORWARD LINE ALONE at least , you say rest for the potentially tougher games , very complacent and i am sure Bristol City would love to hear that ! wasn't Charlton one of those less tougher games on paper !! SORRY Keith you are very wrong in my opinion , that said lets hope we get the result Tuesday just treat every game as the most important

Vydra and Deeney have to start against Bristol City! You should never change a goal scoring partnership!
If there is to be a change then maybe Eustace starts instead of Bottachio and maybe Hall starts instead of Doyley?
This is just to give them game time if so? However I would like to see the same line up as the last two games have been world class! Get three up and then change it bit by bit!

Eastsussexhornet he can not be 'transferred' by the end of January. He is on a season long loan and therefore will be here for the season! Wish people would stop harping on about them signing now. At the start of the year we were told that all the players were signed on a season long loan with WFC having the option to sign them permantly at the end.
The pozzos want us to get promoted to earn the money so they won't derail anything now for a few million quote!

Well it isn't how I understand it but I stand to be corrected. Surely any agreement between two parties who are owned by the same person can be broken by mutual consent? Anyway, I hope you're right. The point I was making in my post was that a winning team should not be tampered with. Full strength, full strength, full strength every week.

For those who missed it on 606, Al bangura's best mate, Robbie Savage, was waxing lyrical about our fourth goal v Huddersfield, stating it was easily the best Championship goal of the season. he stumbled over Christian's surname, but we can forgive him that!

Well said, Boosey. Zola rightly takes a lot of credit for Watford's team performances, but the backroom coaching staff must also take credit for improving the individual performance of each player. And that may well be the deciding factor that persuades Vydra to stay the course.

The be-all and end-all for the Pozzo's is to get Waford into the Premiership. Everything else is secondary. They will do all they can to hold onto Vydra, and keep him at Watford, until the season's end. Then it all depends on where Watford will be next season, whether Vydra signs permanently or not. Unless someone places a ludicrously high offer, Vydra will stay the rest of the season, at least.

Should have said 'whether Vydra signs permanently or not before the end of the month'.
Just to clarify!

that was GFZ's only real mistake which also backfired against Citeh. I am confident big lessons were learned, that we are not ready for such wholesale switches.
Ask yourself why many other teams leading scorers have gone off the boil but ours just gets better and why GFZ rests MV to the bench every so often and almost always pulls him of once we are comfortable.
Stupid to run players into the ground when you have very able replacements available and we have plenty.
I just don't like wholesale adjustments in key area but with a fifty game season, some changes are essential.

Ok, I don't now "completely disagree" but these key players must start. If we're 3-0 up at HT or, say, 2-0 up half way through the 2nd half, substitute them. But we cannot risk making unsettling changes at this critical time.
