Watford boss Gianfranco Zola says he expects a reaction from Fernando Forestieri after a subdued substitute appearance during the draw with Crystal Palace.

While admitting that it was a tough game for the Argentine to make an impact, Zola expected more from his player and said: "I was expecting that Fernando, with fresh legs, would have given us something more in midfield also. It didn’t happen."

He continued: "Certainly it’s not easy to come on in a game like that but he’s a quality player and that is the standard we are playing in so he has to adapt. Fernando has been brilliant for us in the previous games. He wasn’t as good [on Friday] as before but I’m expecting a reaction from him."

Forestieri came on for Matej Vydra in the second half and Vydra also struggled to match his usual high standards.

Vydra only returned to England the day before the Crystal Palace match following international duty with Czech Republic and despite the Pozzo family arranging a private jet for the striker, Zola believes the 20-year-old's hectic schedule had an adverse effect on his performance.

The Hornets head coach said: "I’ve been in the same situation [as Matej] and when you come back, you’re never the same player. You’re not the same player because there’s a lot of travelling, a lot of things going on and it’s normal that you’re not on the same level.

"I wanted to leave him [on the pitch] a little bit more but I saw that he was having a few problems."

Yes, but we went very deep and they went on fire, so there was little opportunity for him to shine. It was an off day for him (and Vydra) but we know it isn't the norm.

I think he needs to learn how to be more productive in a game. He will be judged on assists and goals which have not been too forthcoming. I think he is still adapting to a very different game in England. His eagerness is there for all to see, as he chased back and attempted a slide tackle giving the ball to Palace for their second goal, but he is too eager too impress and needs to relax a little. That will help him to have more end product in the final 3rd.

I wonder about playing him in that forward midfield role in and around Deeney and Vydra. That would be interesting. The downside is that Abdi perhaps wouldn't get forward as much and we know how good he is with Vydra.

You can't blame Fernando last Friday coming on and not getting up to speed, we were pegged back because we lost momentum thru a lack of ball retention, and the culprit was Hogg.I watched the match again onTV , I lost count the number of times he gave the ball away.
GZ will of course see it also , so I expect Battocchio to replace him for the Brum game.
Also Geijo for Deeney, he's gone off the boil recently , perhaps contract negotiations are on his mind , seems to me that he is running down his contract to become a free agent in the summer so to get a massive signing on fee from a midlands club, Aston Villa?
Or perhaps the reason he hasn't signed yet is because we have t offered him enough?
Whatever , I would like to see Geijo play on Saturday, to thread the ball thru to a refreshed Vydra and hopefully normal service is resumed!

TBH Geijo would have been perfect to replace Vydra on Friday night. Out of all 4 of our strikers he is the best at holding the ball up and that was what we were crying out for in the 2nd half.

Would like to see the pairing of Geijo and Vydra given a run out. Think it was the Barnsley game when they both came on as subs it looked a very good pairing.

yes I would defiantly start Geijo in place of Deeney on Saturday, I think their combination will be more productive at the moment; then Deeney depending on how the game is going.
I know our style has changed , certainly for the better but wish we had that big target man on the bench for plan b or c.
Big Chris was never the answer but a much younger and skillful version would be a great bonus to the team

We do not seem to exert that physical presence from corners and set plays that we should, and certainly few goals result.
No I dont want to revert back to a long ball style but just other options. Look at Cardiff Leicester , Hull and Palace, they all have that option if required.

Hogg is good at breaking up the play , he has to be as he gives the ball away so frequently and that's what turned the match, if we kept the ball they could not of got a head of steam up.
Chalobah was affected it seems by the clattering he got.

Forest is joint top of assists this season with 6 same a cassetti and abdi with less starts than them. Not to shabby!?

So right, the best midfield in the champs, that would be Hamps.
Vydra and Geijo would be great to see as it promised much when they have played together, within Troy for impact.
Hogg, does break up opponents play, but his need for time on ball going forward breaks up our moves too.

This lad is great, go on twitter and listening to those opposition fans whose seen him at best and how they'd love him.

A young lad, away from home, come on give the boy a break. One day we will look at him gracing bigger clubs than us and wish we had him back here.
By the way we are fourth from top, probably making playoffs at least, these are good days and we have good players!

He has skill pace vision and he is giving his all. As mentioned he is in new country and trying very hard to gain fair acceptance.Doubters be at there peril he will be class.

How can anyone give FF a hard time? He is a VERY YOUNG player who has just moved here and not been in the team due to form of MV. So of course he is going to be inconsistent when coming on for 25 mins against a top side in the ascendency.

But seriously, if you cannot see what he brings to the team then you are blind, stupid or incredibly thick. Or all three. I sometimes you wish they had an IQ at the gates of football grounds to keep out all the morons who just don't understand what they are watching.

Just to put into context...last year we had Garner to bring on. So please, lets get a grip. FF will be immense so enjoy it.

I rate him highly but coming on against Palace with them on the upper as they were, was the wrong moment. Geijo and Battocchio earlier would have been the call for me.
