Oxhey Jets consolidated second spot in the Spartan South Midlands Premier Division after Holmer Green win
5:05pm Thursday 14th February 2013 in Sport
Oxhey Jets consolidated second place in the Premier Division after a 4-2 victory away at bottom-of-the-table Holmer Green on Saturday.
Jets have stumbled at Green in the past but they quickly found their stride and opened the scoring after five minutes when Lewis Putman collected a Warren Gladdy pass and fired home.
Their lead was soon doubled as Putman again found the net after another clever Gladdy pass and the visitors were 3-0 ahead before 20 minutes as Ian Bywater headed in an Andy Lomas cross.
Jets dictated possession for the remainder of the half but they couldn’t extend their advantage before the interval.
In the second period, the injured Chris Killer was replaced by Terry Smith and the new signing from Hanwell Town made an instant impact.
A free-kick into the box was flicked home by Smith, who scored his first Jets goal with his first touch for the club.
Dean Allen pulled two goals back for Green but they were nothing more than consolations and Jets were deserved winners.
In Division One, Kings Langley knocked Cockfosters off the top of the table after a hard-fought 0-0 draw.
Kings started the brighter of the two sides and Ben Long saw an early shot saved by Tautin Poniskaitis.
Cockfosters worked their way into the match and Edmund Protain was denied by good defending before Adam Hallissey had a chance smothered at the foot of the post.
Few chances were created in the second period but in the final minutes, Ben Long’s fierce shot looked to have won the game.
But man-of-the-match Poniskaitis produced a fine save to ensure a goalless draw between the division’s two highest scorers.
Sun Postal Sports are 16th in the division after suffering a 2-1 defeat at Crawley Green.
