Birkdale Trophies Challenge Cup Semi-Final

Cassiobury Rangers are through to their second cup final appearance in three years in this competition after narrowly overcoming Reed Rangers 3-2. It meant Reed suffered a second successive week of semi-final heartbreak after losing out the week before in the President’s Cup on penalties.

George Minihan headed Reed in front after 14 minutes, but the lead lasted only two minutes when Jack Henley headed home Rob Tomlinson flick-on. Rangers regained the upper hand in the final minute of the half when following a long throw, Lucas Gibbons scored via the crossbar.

The second half was mostly one way towards the Reed goal, but they looked like holding on until 17 minutes from time when Joe Mortimer equalised from six yards.

With their tails up, Cassiobury were now in control of the game and with six minutes remaining Brima Johnson fired home a pass from Chris Parrott to win the tie.

It came down to the oldest saying in football - 'taking your chances' - something Oxhey Park did and their opponents didn’t.

Oxhey scored two quick-fire goals through Trafford Nolan after just four minutes and then ten minutes later Shane Flynn.

For the most of the rest of the opening half, Valley Reserves dominated the game and missed several good chances, with Jack Wilson the main culprit.

However, they did pull a goal back nine minutes after the restart when Chris Day raced through to slot home from the edge of the box.

Again Valley had the better of the chances but Oxhey’s well-organised defence held firm. And with Valley throwing players forward looking for the equaliser, William Fowler scored his side's third goal following a swift counter-attack two minutes into time added on.

Dale Dresh netted a penalty nine minutes later and the win was rounded off by Dom David seven minutes from time.
