The Scottish international played 55 minutes before being replaced by Matt Smith – who scored Oldham’s consolation.

Goals from Kevin Mirallas, Leighton Baines and Leon Osman saw Everton into the quarter finals.

In League One, right-back Lee Hodson returned to the Brentford side and played the entire game as the Bees secured a 2-1 win against Crawley Town.

Steve Leo Beleck was unable to stop Stevenage’s recent slump as they were beaten 1-0 at Scunthorpe.

The striker was brought off after 59 minutes and is still searching for his first goal in English football.

Carl Dickinson played 90 minutes in Coventry City’s 2-0 victory at Bournemouth while Stephen McGinn was brought off with two minutes remaining in Shrewsbury Town’s 2-1 loss at home to Doncaster Rovers.

Britt Assombalonga couldn’t help Southend United avoid a 2-0 defeat against Edgar Davids’ Barnet in League Two.

The powerful striker was the Shrimpers main threat and came close for the visitors on two occasions. He was replaced in the 78th minute of the contest.

Midfielder Piero Mingoia played 69 minutes for Boreham Wood in their 2-1 loss at Maidenhead United on Wednesday night.

I'm only writing this so that poor old Chris has at least one post under his article!

Did a loan watch on Stephen McGinn on Tuesday evening. His touches were a class above everyone else on the pitch, especially as he was left to patrol central midfield by himself after his partner was sent off late in the first half.

Sad to hear the cheers as Chris was going off.
