Watford boss Gianfranco Zola admits he didn't see Wolverhampton Wanderers equaliser coming
10:42pm Friday 1st March 2013 in Sport By Anthony Matthews, Group Sports Editor
Gianfranco Zola. Picture: Action Images
Gianfranco Zola admitted he couldn’t see Wolves equalising and was left to lament his side’s failure to kill the game off before they conceded an injury-time equaliser in tonight’s 1-1 draw.
After Almen Abdi had given the Hornets the lead with a free-kick late in the first half, Ikechi Anya spurned a glorious opportunity to make the game safe when he failed to convert Marco Cassetti’s low cross from close range.
Fernando Forestieri also missed the target when well placed in the penalty area. But even after Bakary Sako had levelled three minutes into injury-time, Watford could still have made it win number 11 away on the road this season had Forestieri not sliced over from ten yards.
“It is disappointing because obviously I didn’t see it [the Wolves goal] coming,” said Zola. “We were in control of the game but I believe the difference wasn’t the goal conceded, the difference was the second goal we didn’t score and we had the opportunities to do that. We didn’t manage to convert those occasions and in the end it was that goal – it can happen, it’s part of football.
“We controlled the game better than we did in the last few matches. We dominated the possession and in key areas we were in control but we missed the conclusion. We had the opportunities and in the end we paid.”
The Hornets head coach told Sky Sports in his post-match interview that he ‘thought the game was won’. Asked about this, he responded: “We were controlling the set play situation quite well, something that could have been a problem because they kept putting a lot of bodies forward and in those circumstances it can happen, you can concede. Because of that, because we were controlling those situations well, I thought it was finished. I honestly didn’t see the last goal coming.
“But I repeat, we have to be more clinical when we have the opportunities because 1-0 away from home I believe most of the time is not enough.”

Fernando too, he really needs to learn how to finish under pressure.
As usual, great performances from Abdi, Chalobah, Battochio and Cassetti.
Some bizarre decisions from the ref and where did the 5 minutes extra time come from?
Oh well. Away to Hull and Leicester will be crucial games.

I don't have a major problem with Forestieri but he doesn't work hard enough, he is a fully paid-up member of the amateur dramatics society and he can't finish.

The point is that Vydra would have knocked in both those chances with his eyes closed.

The fact is he is a very good striker and he does finish well when given the opportunity, he wasn't getting those opportunities tonight and wasn't getting into those positions to finish anyway. We just don't know if vydra would have finished them, he doesn't finish them all and we can't expect him to. I didn't see any diving antics from ff and haven't for a long while, like I said, when his own fans started getting on his back for a bit of drama he lost a bit of passion and it shows in his displays. He might go down easily but when has he last been booked for diving? He works hard to win the ball if he loses it and will work very hard for the team.

We are a very young team for the most part and I think we do need that little bit more experience. Yes, I know now we are in this position we all want to go up and the way we have played on ocassions does make it frustrating when it doesn't quite happen, but...how could we have ever dreamt we'd be where we are now 12 months ago?
Deeney and Vydra were both some way form their best tonight and those final passes have gone wrong the last couple of games, but we are still in a great position.
Bond was a huge plus tonight and had a superb game. If Pozzos can take us this far in 9 months, surely the future has to be very bright indeed. I've no doubt that, even if we don't make it this season, it won't be long before we do go up and we'll have one hell of a ride into the bargain!

I just don't agree with the view of some that;
1/ A point at Wolves was a good result given our current objective of 2nd spot
2/ We will easily beat Sheff W (hence my point about dropped points to lower teams)
3/ We will definately go up through playoffs if we don't finish in top 2
4/ We will defintely go up next yr if we don't this year (no vydra, chalo, possibly deeney so we will be a new team)
5/ We will be challenging for euro spot in 3 yrs if we do go up.
Just think we need a bit of realism. 6 months ago we'd have salivated at the thought of a playoff spot. Expectations change and we'd be disappointed with that from here wouldn't we ? We are better away than at home and last night was a really good chance to push on and put pressure on those below us. The frustration felt by most on here is that we came so close and had great chances to make wolves late goal a pointless consolation.

Also what is happening with our 2nd half performances ? have literally thrown away points vs Palace and Wolves , very nearley did vs Derby , 4 massive points thrown away at business end of season
those that think that tues vs Sheff weds is a for gone conclusion should maybe have a re think, there form has improved and i see a defeat on the horizon due to Zola's complacencey .
His substitutes last night were awful , Hogg lost his man for the goal , FF had a mare again, feared worst when he came on as we saw how he cost us points vs Palace, we were 2 nil up at the time ,he promptly gave ball away and they ran upfield and scored , last night it was at other end of field he let us down ! Pudil made no difference .
why not Geijo on for Vydra ! why is Anya playing out of position on left when was so destructive playing on the right ,his best position as seen vs Bham away !
Appreciate cassetti great on right also so why not maybe play FF in that anya position out wide where if he gets his head up and plays like a winger he could be destructive too especially at home ?
For me Wolves were worst team we have played this season so far, especially considering they were at home with the so called high profile named players in ther team, we were excellent in first half when Mr Zola's excellent Plan A was working , but when it stopped working , once again the plan B was found wanting !
very disappointed and i beleive automatic has gone now , play offs at best ,would i have taken that at start of season , of course Yes but having witnessed calibre of players given to Zola i feel we are within our rights to be disapointed if top two position eludes us, hope i am very wrong !

I for one want auto promo, for my heart seems to be going ten to the dozen at every game, but Wolves were better second half than a lot of our fans are giving them credit for and if not for a great display from Bond ( what a game, a future star) they could have had a few themselves.

Give the boy a break, Hogg lost possession that led to their goal, whose the more guilty?
Fair result. Good ref...unusual!
M6 closed on way back, now that's something to tut about.

Fair result ? They huffed and puffed but we should have buried them with the clear chances we had.

most worrying point of this interview for me is Zola's comment he did not see goal coming !! , was Bond not our outstanding player , everyone seems to think so , so if your goalie is best player suggests opponenents where doing ok in 2nd half Mr Zola !

Have to agree with a lot of posts on here - I am not that impressed with FF. He loses possession far too easily and often in areas where teams can punish you. His passing is poor and finishing woeful. He must be doing plenty in training for GZ to give him a place in the squad. Arguably he has cost the team 4 points from the Palace and Wolves games.
If we are to grind out narrow wins, we need to defend in their half rather that sit too deep and invite trouble.
Looks like we are hell bent on pointing a finger at one player, and probably will tut him into oblivion.

Firstly hello to the sensible fans who agree the last 3/4 games we have not been ourselves have not played our best football and our strikers have not been as potent in the last 3 games but we have had a bit of a wobble and still taken 10 points from 4 games. To play wolves away with them fighting relegation would have been a difficult game for any of the top 6 and cardiff were lucky last week . I agree we should have played better and lacked any urgency in the 2nd half that is frustraiting but to play bad and still get points remain undefeated and still in the top 2 keeps us in the momentum were still getting points. Zola will drill it in to them how to finish a game.
Next for the negative people out there who cant believe zola didnt see it coming. If your watching the game on sky with 27 camera angles your going to see a different game to him. I could sense a lucky goal could be on the cards but up until that point the defence and midfield were regimental and forced them to cross from out wide like zola said that didnt cost us the points our forwards yes Deeney and Vydra couldnt finish Fessi missed two good chances but if they was at the begining of the game it wouldnt have been as bad he needs 45 to get into the game and his stride.
People we small watford are doing things that exceed all our pre season expectations we are highest scoreres best team away and hard to beat won 7 of our last 9 why are we not happy!

Well he showed yet again that a five year contract was a waste no wonder he was so eady to pin down to a contract! If we are going to get auto promotion we have to learn to play these struggling teams I.E. I believe there are a handfull of us on here that can see the bigger picture. I feel these negative comments come from supporters that have decided to follow watford again after a self imposed ban since 2007. The point I try to make is we have won different in the last 3/4 games played poor 2nd half and still took points only cardiff are doing the same.

Wolves improved second half, Vydra was not at his best, Anya missed an open goal. Hogg come on and gave the ball away, all this and we got a draw. I was as disappointed as anyone especially stuck on a car park of M6 coming home, but perspective is needed.
At the start of season we were all saying tenth would be an improvement. We've already assured that. We are also always going on about how teams in this division cn all best one another, yet when we draw we lose sight of that.

I just don't agree with the view of some that;
1/ A point at Wolves was a good result given our current objective of 2nd spot
Onwards and upwards !
I for one want auto promo, for my heart seems to be going ten to the dozen at every game, but Wolves were better second half than a lot of our fans are giving them credit for and if not for a great display from Bond ( what a game, a future star) they could have had a few themselves.
But as you say in a sort of juxtaposition way onwards and upwards!

But I am concerned that since he signed the contract he has looked poor when playing, and GZ also seems to think he is not right---He was pushing for a regular place, now he has become a bit part. He looks to have lost a little confidence, looks to panic in front of goal when it matters (the pressure was off against QPR), and, I think, in trying to impress, has become greedier in possesion. He has tremendous ability, and I have faith that the coaching staff will sort him out, in time.

Yes of course its the most exciting time for years. Too greedy? So you'd rather we didn't get 2nd spot because that would be just a little too much for you? Perhaps we should hope to finish 5th or 6th instead ?? Given where we are, we must go for that 2nd spot which explains the mass disappointment at 2 dropped points.
So you are one of the "we'll walk this league next year" ?
Remember there will be no Vydra, Chalob, possibly deeney, possibly Abdi (says he's happy but is clearly too good for this league). There may also be changes to the loan rules. Lets take any chance we get to go up - we may never get another one. we can worry about it when the hangover wears off !!

Why was Forestieri the only loanee to be given and to sign a 5 year contract? He can't pass and he can't shoot. Some of you keep mentioning the QPR game. When else has she shown the talent of Vydra, Abdi, Cassetti, Battocchio or Pudil, let alone Chelsea's Chalobah? Forestieri isn't good enough for the Championship let alone in the Premier League. However, I do like the idea of playing him on the wing. Perhaps, then, he wouldn't immediately shoot when there are others around him in better positions.

Teams are now sitting back against our counter attacks just as Wolves did last night. We need to be able to unlock these tight defences and at the moment we are not doing it.

As someone has already written six months ago we would never ever have expected to be doing so well.
We are a young team and playing at times some brilliant football.
We have enjoyed two strikers scoring a lot of goals despite unfit players at the start and having researched the subject the Italians take reserve and youth football very seriously.
We did not play that well against derby and against Wolves relaxed too much. Our strikers, wingers etc did not play that well. We miss the experience of Hall and have barely seen Eustace and yet we are right up there.
We are not in the position of Cardiff we good, experienced championship players who can manage a match but we can on our day attain greater heights than the can only dream of.
We do not deserve such a great team, we cannot fill the ground but what we should do is cut the arrogance, support and enjoy the team and hope we can achieve the proverbial miracle.
Enjoy and support and DO NOT expect perfection every game.

I was at Wolves last night and was disappointed at first cause we didnt generally dominate the game with neat passing and created enough chances to kill the game off. Unfortunately we werent clinical enough and were a bit too sloppy with our passing at times 2nd half. I also feel we defended excellently with Nosworthy Ekstrand and Doyley beasts at the back & Bond absolutely tremendous in such a pressure situation.... However, having said & felt this i dont see why so many fans are being so critical about the team and in particular Fernando Forestieri. Wolves may have been poor but why is a point away at a club who were premierleague last season seen as shocking. We cant expect to win every game we play, we have to get behind the team as im sure there will be plenty of twists and turns for the teams chasing promotion over the last 11/12 games this season. And the criticism of some over Forestieri is shocking and absolutely disgraceful. He is clearly a confidence based player, and the fact he's barely played in the past 3 months has contributed to him losing confidence which is affecting his performances. But he was tremendous when he first came into the team & nearly everyone agreed he was one of the most skilful and exciting players we'd ever seen at Watford. So now he's off form people say he's shocking and not good enough for the Championship, get real people and stop being so pathetic, its difficult to turn it on with the odd cameo here and there. Dont you see being so critical is counter-productive, its hardly going to make him play better. Get off your high horses and get behind him & the whole team and enjoy the journey were on. This is 2 of the biggest months potentially in our history, lets get behind the boys 100% all the way and enjoy the promotion push.... COYH!!!!

The wing back system is good, think it falters as Cassetti tires, but look where it's taken us thus far.
We defend slender leads too deep, we need to be playing out games in the opposition half.
It's easy to see what players are not comfortable to this system, but can't be bothered to say them, as the usual suspects will get bent out of shape

Thing is when Cassetti is swinging in those deft passes and crosses we need to capitalise on them. I also think them neat passing triangles get a little tight and congested at times, crying out for more space, so players can come in at pace.we are still doing great though, and as said we are not going o win them all
But as always just my opinion

most worrying point of this interview for me is Zola's comment he did not see goal coming !! , was Bond not our outstanding player , everyone seems to think so , so if your goalie is best player suggests opponenents where doing ok in 2nd half Mr Zola ! Also what is happening with our 2nd half performances ? have literally thrown away points vs Palace and Wolves , very nearley did vs Derby , 4 massive points thrown away at business end of season those that think that tues vs Sheff weds is a for gone conclusion should maybe have a re think, there form has improved and i see a defeat on the horizon due to Zola's complacencey .

To say he can't pass and not even Championship class, tells me that you are CLUELESS ,CLUELESS about football ! Anyone who has a gnats **** worth of knowledge can see he is pure class!
Remember who gave the ball to Chalobah for his first goal against Wolves at home, the sublime pass played with the outside of boot to Geijo 's goal v Chlton etc.
Last night surely you plebs on here cannot blame him for not getting a victory?
Of the three major plays he was involved in,
the breakaway down the left he could of played the ball earlier to Deeney but it wasn't clearcut and was soon closed down.
The two shots he missed, after watching on TV,with the first his standing leg slipped from under him!
So nothing wrong with his technique there just his studs.
The second he should least hit the target, but please anyone on here tell me who never misses?
He terrorises defences when he runs at them so let's get behind ALL our players as we are all in this together .
I dont understand the mentality of people that crucify there own.
Mind you it's not the first time in history is it?

10/12 points and everyone is moaning. LCFC lost, CCFC lost, HCFC lost to Bolton last week....
Everyone beats everyone. Hull v palace tues means a win can send us back to second if that's a draw or palace....and then we would be run beaten in 10.
4of hulls last 5 games are against teams in bottom 5( Barnsley Ipswich Bristol city and wolves), 4 teams that will be fighting to stay in the division.
I think if we get 4 or 6 points against hull and Leicester then we are fine.
Remember our first 8 games we had iwelumo and Gardner up front. If we don't go up then I think we will next year as yes vydra and Nate will go, but we will get another decent midfielder in and another scoring machine. It's not like they will all go and we start the first game next season with a midfield of Murray, Hogg, eustace,Yeats and Forsyth is it!!
Get behind the team. Will be at all the remaining away games except Leicester.

WTF!
I've gone down the posts am not sure what to do. Are we Wolves or QPR? Have the Pozzos cleared off or maybe I missed the fact we got beat 5-0 last night. Not quite sure what poster to sling the mud at. If we could transfer such passion to the Vic instead of hiding behind the keyboards, it'd be a fortress. All I can add to the debate (slagging match) is that I think there's only one manager in football at the moment who can teach FF to put the ball in the back of the net and we've got him.
Now be gentle with me...

My point is, Battocchio scored as a result of Forrests devastating movement, so when I say I see him as more of a player that creates behind strikers I think this lends weight to this theory.

Is this for real????? Who are these people criticising Watford! We are having an amazing season, seen so many goals, awesome away days. We are now 3rd in the league and if we win the remainder of our games we go up automatically. To criticise the players is easy, how about pointing out the positives of this season. Premier or championship next season there will still be a re shuffle of players. To criticise Forestieri is bizarre, his finishing isn't the best, but he isn't to blame for the result when the rest of the team had the time they did to score the goals. Maybe we should look at how Wolves set up in the first half, there was no room in and around the penalty area to create anything in the first half. Come on pessimists lets cheer Watford to the prem. remember aswell if Vydra, Chalobah do go there will be replacements bought in, we narrowly missed out on a very exciting polish lad ini jan, he might come and looks amazing, however cross you want to be, Watford will be premier league an it will be soon.

Last note on Forresterri and his band of hecklers ( some sent to him on FB and Twitter...nice support) in that fantastic move that led to our fourth goal against Huddersfield, there were 12 touches and feints. Forrest was involved with seven of them.

Bring back Garner and co.
Do you have an obsessive disorder also?
But I am not tweeting him abuse like others are Forrest, of which I'm sure you will not find it in your mean heart to condemn.
Scully, as for the disorder bit, yes mate I do. So is that now acceptable to highlight this publicly? Be interesting to see the PCs master of ceremonies ESHs opinion of the Micky taking of someone's disability! Ah thought not...Harry's Bar?

Why was Forestieri the only loanee to be given and to sign a 5 year contract? He can't pass and he can't shoot. Some of you keep mentioning the QPR game. When else has she shown the talent of Vydra, Abdi, Cassetti, Battocchio or Pudil, let alone Chelsea's Chalobah? Forestieri isn't good enough for the Championship let alone in the Premier League. However, I do like the idea of playing him on the wing. Perhaps, then, he wouldn't immediately shoot when there are others around him in better positions.

This guy comes over - clearly not the finished article, but just as clearly a very talented young man - signs a five-year contract, issues a statement saying how much he adores the club, the manager and his teammates, integrates himself into the squad as well as anyone... misses a couple of chances live on Sky and gets abused on his twitter account for being a c--t, the worst player in the Championship and nothing more than a useless showpony. I was so embarrassed reading some of the offensive comments he's been subjected to.
I suppose my overriding point is: 'how will abusing a young man who is desperate to perform for our club going to help him to perform for our club?' If I stood over some of these twitter idiots at their desks on a monday morning and told them they were sh!t, would they enjoy that? Would it inspire them to do their job better?

In our best 11 do we have Ribena man, who if he didn't have a rock for a head he'd be dangerous?
Anyway that's the hoovering complete, I've named all the Dust mites..there was only one Scully, as if I need an incentive to clean!
I'd like to propose unhappiest posters team.

A young man, thousands of miles from home, loves being here and a real unharnessed talent.
The Cardiff fan is worried
The QPR fan should be more worried
