AUDIO: Relentless Dave Jones slams referee after Watford's 2-1 win against Sheffield Wednesday

Picture: Action Images Picture: Action Images

Referee criticism is common in press conferences but Sheffield Wednesday manager Dave Jones’ comments about referee Darren Sheldrake last night still surprised many in attendance. It wasn’t only the headline-grabbing phrases used by Jones, it was the quantity.

Jones blamed Sheldrake for Sheffield Wednesday’s 2-1 defeat to Watford after the referee refused to award either a penalty or a goal in the first half.

The former Cardiff City boss claimed Sheldrake should be removed as a Championship referee and be forced to see a psychologist.

Jones described it as one of the poorest performances he had seen for some time and that Sheldrake’s display took away from Wednesday’s performance, which he claimed was “of the highest order”.

Listen to part of Jones’ press conference below.

There are two rules in soccer about referee decisions.
Rule 1. The Referee's decision is always right.
Rule 2. Even when he's wrong, Rule 1 applies.
Referees have a tough enough job without moaning minnies like DJ finding fault every time one doesn't go his way.
The fault lies with the Football League, UEFA and FIFA who have refused to bring in technology. They use it in rugby, cricket, tennis etc and it's time it was used in football. Atleast we'll have goal line technology next season and about time too. However I bet DJ will still find fault, people like him always do.

I used to have respect for Dave Jones. These days he just always has a reason to blame someone or something else. He seems to do nothing but moan and complain about officials. Well guess what Dave..they are human. They make mistakes, they miss things just like you seemed to (conveniently) have missed the handball in the build up to your goal. Are you telling me a referee's decision/indecision has never gone your way at some point? Grow up man and stop whinging. You are becoming a bore.
It's embarrassing how he spends so much time blaming the officials. This isn't an isolated incident. I'd like to see him officiate a game then afterwards we can all pile in and criticise him. Lets see how easy you'd find it eh Dave. Referees have a tough job and will make mistakes. Sometimes in your favour, sometimes not mate.
Deal with it, you're a big man - albeit a bitter and twisted one.

I bet he wouldn't have moaned if Lita had scored that header late on after someone had clearly shoved Cassetti over in the build up! You're a joke Jones!

I've refereed junior football (U16 and U18) and it is a tough job, you know from spectator reaction when you've got one wrong certainly at close quarters in "park" football. But...these Guys are allegedly professionals and the amount they get wrong is unforgiveable. I watched Jones on Sky last night and he was moaning about a Nosworthy handball and that the ball had crossed the line for one of their chances. Certainly Nos did handball it but as someone else said, this cuts both ways - handball in the build up to their goal as well.
However, as much as he moaned I think if that ref had seen everything that went on last night (trip on Fez after second goal, elbow on Vydra) then he would have a lot more to moan about this morning!

I'm sorry but Sheffied Wedneday are the biggest cheats we've played this season. Deeney was constantly fouled - a few arms to his face and a couple of times where he was clearly dragged down in the box. Their goal was assisted by some great basketball skills and not to mention their timewasting from 25 mins in!! Sorry Jones but your team were a disgrace!

WessexLad says...
9:57am Wed 6 Mar 13

How can Jones blame the referee for deciding that the ball hadn't crossed the line? From my seat high in the Rookery, I couldn't be sure either. But what I did see was the assistant referee standing by the corner flag and peering intently along the goal line. Accordingly, I have absolute confidence that the decision was correct.

In the outfield, however, the referee was poor: penalising good tackles but not manhandling, handball or blatant timewasting.

No credit where credits due we can't blame the Ref for the defeat, we were punished for missing some sitters first half, that's what happens when your playing a quality team like Udinese (sorry I meant Watford). Onwards and upwards, good luck for the rest of the season. UTO

I've watched the Nozz handball on Sky loads of times this morning and still say that the ball was headed onto Noz's arm (ball to arm) and it didn't cross the line either. How would DJ know from where he was anyway. Just ignor the whingeing git.

JohnnyHornet says...

And that's from a Manager who got a very good rub of the green from the Referee throughout the game, 1 challenge that should have been a red card, constant time wasting and many niggley fouls that you would expect from a team of dirty norther "B"'s, god only knows what Jones would have done if the ref had been a homer.

Ball to arm from just a couple of feet with the player facing the other way ... only Man Utd get those ones.

The whole of the ball was not over the whole of the line, Dave Jones needs glasses.

I really don't think the referee had much influence on the result at all. I certainly didn't feel that we were being favoured - the opposite if anything.

The problem with last night was home grown. For some reason our defence collapsed and our forwards were just incapable of hitting the target. We scraped that win and I suppose we can say "who cares, it's 3 points" but if we played in the Premiership with a defence like that we would have been pulverised.

As I say, the referee had no affect on the result.

The only thing Jones gets right is the fact that this ref had a stinker. Didn't seem to be on the same planet and let Wednesday get away with all sorts of skullduggery and timewasting.
He gave bad decisions for both teams . It was debatable wether ball crossed our goalline but nothing debatable about the clear handball missed in the build-up to their goal.
Bottom line David Jones is dont expect any sympathy when your team were happy to timewaste and cheat when they thought they might sneak something from this game.

The ref was terrible for both sides. Had Wednesday won the game Dave Jones would not have mentioned the ref. I have no idea why Dave Jones is a football manager. He moans at everything in the games whether it be officials, fans, players, journalists or pitches. He never smiles or shows any emotion and basically has the mentality that everyone hates him. I detest Neil Warnock but at least he loves football and has a real passion for the game. Dave Jones should just quit and do something that he enjoys...maybe a netball manager.

Oh dear Mr Jones. Think you should have checked the replay before talking all your drivel. No way could you give or expect a penalty for that and no way was it over line. Maybe the pressure is getting to you!

Just watched the highlights to see what all the fuss was about. It hit nos on his upper arm from about 2 yards away, with about 6 other players around him and then erkstrand clears it off the line, with no appeals for a goal from the guy next to him. However he could see this from the tunnel i do not know

Davey Jones climbed into the dugout
Davey Jones hope in his heart
Davey Jones Watford took you to the cleaners
In the press conference la', you didn't sound so smart

Davey Jones moaning like a minnie
Davey Jones you're sounding like a clown
Davey Jones no matter how you whinny
You'll always be a loser when the Horns are in town

Davey Jones you're sounding like a prat now
Davey Jones you're really getting on my nerves
Davey Jones just go back to Sheffield
You're not fit to work with the Owls reserves

Davey Jones sitting on your team coach
Davey Jones the season's going as planned
Davey Jones you're really moving forwards
If you count League 1 as the Promised Land

Davey Jones you're going home pointless
Davey Jones just get out of town
Davey Jones you are so very charmless
And come May the 4th you're taking Wednesday down
