Steve Finn remained wicketless as England’s struggles continued on day three of the first Test in Dunedin, leaving them with a major battle on their hands to avoid defeat.

The Watford-born bowler’s figures stood at nought for 102 off 26 when bad light stopped play, with New Zealand leading by 235 runs after reaching 402 for seven in reply to the tourists’ 167 all out.

Hamish Rutherford was the undoubted star of the show for the hosts, making a superb 171 on debut, but with skipper Brendon McCullum closing on a half-century on 44 not out, New Zealand will be confident of increasing their first-innings lead beyond 250.

James Anderson was the most successful of England’s bowlers so far, taking four for 108, while Stuart Broad claimed two for 89.
