Watford's on-loan striker Britt Assombalonga scored his 14th goal of the season for Southend, helping the Shrimpers to a 2-1 win over Port Vale in League One.

The 20-year-old has now netted two goals in four matches as Southend move to within five points of the play-off spots.

Craig Forsyth started for Derby County but was unable to prevent the Rams suffering a 3-1 defeat against Birmingham City in the Championship.

Carl Dickinson made his sixth appearance for Coventry City and played the full 90 minutes as the Sky Blues won 2-1 winners away to Scunthorpe United in League One.

Steve Leo Beleck came on for Stevenage just before the hour mark but saw his team lose 2-0 to Preston North End.

Lee Hodson was forced to watch from the bench as Brentford lost 2-0 at Carlisle United, while Chris Iwelumo was also an unused substitute as Oldham Athletic were edged out 1-0 at the hands of Tranmere Rovers.

Stephen McGinn was on the bench but played no part in Shrewsbury Town's 2-0 loss at home to Leyton Orient.

Piero Mingoia came on in the second half for Boreham Wood but the 21-year-old was unable to alter a goalless draw against Dorchester Town in the Blue Square Bet South.
