Watford striker Matej Vydra nominated for Player of the Year and Young Player of the Year awards

Watford striker Matej Vydra has been nominated for both the Championship Player of the Year and the Football League's Young Player of the Year awards.

The Hornets forward has scored 20 goals in the Championship this season including a golden patch between December and January when the 20-year-old bagged 10 in seven matches.

In the Championship Player of the Year category, Vydra is nominated alongside Blackpool’s Tom Ince and Crystal Palace’s Glenn Murray.

The Young Player of the Year award meanwhile, given to the best young player across the whole of the Football League, sees Vydra up against Ince and Crystal Palace’s Wilfried Zaha.

Richard Heaselgrave, Chief Commercial Officer at The Football League, said: “The Football League Awards are a great way to celebrate the work that goes on behind the scenes at each club, as well as the action that has taken place on the pitch each week.

“To make these shortlists is a real achievement. I would like to wish all those nominated the best of luck and we look forward to announcing the winners.”

Previous winners of the Championship award include Phil Jagielka (2006), Kevin Phillips (2008) and Kevin Nolan (2010).

The shortlists were drawn up based on votes from managers in the respective divisions and the winners will be announced on Sunday.

What can I say 'The boy done well' in a tough field. It's an achievement that reflects how far WFC has come but there is still the not so small matter of unfinished business. Hope it doesn't go to his head.

He has had a very good two thirds of the season, he hasn't learnt how to get the hard goals when he is double marked though so I think Murray and zaha will get the awards. Great achievement for him though and a shoe in for the club player of the year.

Vydra looks like he's feeling sorry for himself at the moment, like his chin's dropped. He needs to get things in perspective, a visit to a children's hospice or something may help.

You can imagine the reaction of Ian Holloway if Wilfred Zaha or Glenn Murray do not win, or from Paul Ince if his son does not get a prize.

What a ridicoulous thing to say!!!He just needs to get on with what he is paid to do...score goals which have not been many in the last few games when needed!!!

Personally don't think Zaha should be in with a shout - if his two competitors are also nominated for the full award (Ince and Vydra), surely that means they have done better than him?

His recent performances don't merit winning the award and does seem timing is wrong when so much of the season has yet to be played out.

Abdi is a more worthy candidate for me in the main category and Chalobah in the young player section.

yes Abdi for me. Look how MV & TDs goals have dried up without him. He is the pulse of the team and chips in with his fair share of goals too (which is why I'd like an update on his injury, LD et al !!).

Not sure who will win this if it is marked down to consistency being the key, but then on managers are voting and we have played them all once so guess it could be down to that fact alone, Ince and Hollowhead will not be voting anything Watford that's for sure and what the rest saw when he was doing the business game in game out, in which case he should walk it. Thank god it is not FL cronies otherwise he wouldn't have made the shortlist!

If I feel sorry for myself I usually find a nice cake does the trick.

We are under a transfer embargo until the end of the summer transfer window, so as it stands none of the current loanees will be able to sign or extend their loans without league approval. In view of the uproar from the likes of Hollowhead I think it is unlikely we will get such approval..

Then we sign them on September 1 IF we are still in this division and IF the league do not approve them before. Big deal.

Most awards in any industry are a bit titty. This is no different. And where are the nominations for defensive players? I like Matej and I'm sure he has a great career ahead of him. Whether he wins or not means jack. (Anyway he won't). Lets win promotion.

I understand what you mean by perspective and all that, but perhaps the lad ( the same one we were all fretting over a few weeks back that he might be off) is down because he hasn't scored.
We Watford fans really do the hero to zero bit better than anyone else.

No mate. All clubs have fans who only see it black or white. Thankfully we have balanced pragmatists like your good self to add a sense of perspective. Vydra is young and needs the experience of being double marked... In time it will serve him well.

This embargo is not new. While its been in place we have loaned and bought players, apparently a new one in tonight. Please stop fretting .
I think Hollowheads noise was to help add to case against us and somehow sway towards a point deduction.

Just in case nobody has seen this

BEAGS SAYS: The gulf between the Premier League and Championship is huge but between international football and the Championship it is is immeasurable. The young centre-halves at Hull, Jack Hobbs and James Chester, have done well but have been helped by playing as part of a back three, and while the most outstanding second-tier centre-backs, Cardiff's Mark Hudson and Leicester's Wes Morgan, are strong, resolute and good leaders, they are probably not international class. However, Watford's Nathanial Chalobah, who can play at centre-half or centre-midfield is someone I would put in the England squad now. He is elegant, athletic and has a great temperament, while he has also excelled at all international age groups he has represented; he reminds me of a young Yaya Toure in that he can influence a game from any position. He is THE outstanding talent in English football and could POSSIBLY replace Frank Lampard in the Chelsea's engine rom next season but will DEFINITELY play for England.

Somebody has finally noticed how good chalobah is. And guess what hollowhead.... He's English! All that's right with English football!
