It is another indication of the success of Watford’s campaign that there is not a runaway this year but all the votes have now been counted and the 41st recipient of the Watford Observer Player of the Season has been decided.

The plans for revealing the identity of the winner are understandably fluid and will be dependent on the outcome of tomorrow’s huge clash with Leeds United.

The trophy will be presented, as usual, at the club’s annual awards dinner on Sunday. But if the Hornets are promoted tomorrow, the plan is to hand over the trophy after the game so the fans can enjoy the moment.

If it goes to the play-offs though, the intention is to re-present the trophy at the home leg.

Unusually in comparison to recent seasons, the three voting groups – the players, away fans and those who had their say online – all disagreed over who should succeed Adrian Mariappa as the winner, but they each came up with the same top three players in different finishing orders.

However, there was no such disagreement in the voting for what turned out to be a very one-sided Goal of the Season competition, with the winner finishing more than 2,000 points clear of the runner-up.
