Malky Mackay has vowed Cardiff City “will do all we can to finish on a high” at Hull City tomorrow but the champions will travel to the KC Stadium without Watford old boy Heidar Helguson, who has returned home to Iceland after seemingly playing his last game in England.

A win for the Bluebirds will mean the Hornets only need a point at home to Leeds United to ensure they pip the Tigers to second spot on goal difference and join Cardiff in the Premier League next season.

Former Vicarage Road boss Mackay told Wales Online: “We have to respect the league.

“This match is live on television and the outcome of the matches tomorrow will mean £100m and more to one team.

“We have been top of the Championship for more than five months and we will do all we can to finish on a high.”

While the pressure will be off for City’s fans tomorrow, the former Hornets defender, assistant boss and manager added: “Everybody here knows how much is at stake for the other teams and we will give this everything we have.

“Cardiff fans are turning out in force again. They want to see their team play well and we will do everything possible to ensure that is what happens.”

The Bluebirds though, will go in search of a last-day win without joint leading scorer Helguson, who is out of contract at the end of the season and has been allowed to return to his native Iceland.

Mackay had nothing but praise for a player who he brought back to Vicarage Road on loan in the 2009/10 season.

The City boss said: “Heidar is going into semi-retirement to play football in Iceland and we wish him all the best.

“He made a huge contribution for us. With the injury to Nicky Maynard he ended up playing a lot more games than he thought he would.

“Heidar was the man who really stepped up to the plate. He was the battering ram for us and his overall contribution for us, not just in goals scored because he always gets eight to ten in a season, but the way he has contributed to other people scoring goals too.

“He’s also a top pro, just the way he carries himself. He’s a joy to have around the place. He’s the type of character I would fill a club with. I have great admiration for him.”

During his time at Vicarage Road, Helguson scored 75 goals in 174 starts, plus 54 substitute appearances.
