So it will be Crystal Palace who will stand in the way of Watford and promotion to the Premier League at Wembley Stadium on Monday, May 27 after the Eagles won 2-0 at Brighton & Hove Albion to secure their place in the Championship play-off final tonight.
Following a goalless draw at Selhurst Park on Friday in the first leg, Ian Holloway’s side advanced to the shoot out for the final promotion place thanks to two second-half goals from Wilfried Zaha, who rejoined Palace on loan for the remainder of the season after signing for Manchester United in the last transfer window.
In a twist of fate, the season will end as it started for both clubs as the Hornets got their campaign off to a winning start with a 3-2 victory at Palace on the opening day of the league campaign.
The Eagles though, came from two goals down to earn a 2-2 draw at Vicarage Road in the return in February.
