Peterborough United chairman Darragh MacAnthony has revealed the club smashed its transfer record to sign Watford striker Britt Assombalonga.

The Posh sealed the 20-year-old's signature for an undisclosed fee on a four-year deal and it is unclear how the deal has exactly been structured.

But MacAnthony took to Twitter to express his delight at signing Assombalonga who he says was Peterborough's number one target this summer.

MacAnthony Tweeted: "Delighted to finally land our No 1 summer target & smash our transfer record with young Britt Assombalonga signing 4 year deal today!#goals".

He also praised Watford saying: "New number 9 at last. Posh fans will love way Britt plays & thanks to Watford for being fantastic to deal with."

Peterborough sold striker Dwight Gayle to Crystal Palace earlier this month with some reports suggesting the Posh made £8.5m from the deal.

And McAnthony has moved fast to bring in reinforcements, revealing another forward could yet follow Assombalonga to London Road.

He tweeted: "That's target número uno landed. Now time to reel in a striking gem before end of month. #Goalsarecoming".

Assombalonga, who scored 16 goals during a loan spell at Southend United last term, is training with his new team-mates today and Peterborough manager Darren Ferguson believes the forward has all the attributes to succeed in League One.

"He has a lot of potential the boy, he is strong physically, good pace, good finisher and a really nice lad. He ticks all of the boxes," Ferguson told Peterborough's club website.

"I had a good chat with Gianfranco about him. We thought initially it was going to be a loan, but the chairman has come up with the money and that is fantastic for me."
