Watford's Adam Thompson joins Southend United on loan until January

Watford Observer: Picture: Holly Cant Picture: Holly Cant

Watford defender Adam Thompson has joined Southend United on loan until January.

Northern Ireland international Thompson played in a trial match for the Shrimpers on July 30 against a young West Ham United side.

The 20-year-old has played for the Hornets 16 times but has been told his future lies elsewhere. He was left at home when the first team went on their pre-season trip to Italy and has not been given a squad number for the 2013/14 campaign.

Thompson, who has had spells on loan at Wycombe Wanderers and Brentford in the past, is out of contract next summer.

On his Twitter page, Thompson said: “Happy to have signed for Southend on loan, great club. Hopefully have a successful time there and get some games.

“Thanks for all the best wishes to Watford and Southend fans.”

Good luck to the lad, certainly would have done a job under the old regime just not good enough for the direction we are going in.
Although why not just release him on a free, although he can't be earning that much in comparison, it would be good to get him off the wage bill. If Southend are reluctant to sign him him on a long term deal, give him a year contract then take it from there. Seems a little silly to have him on our books at all.

Adam is on of those players who the timing of the takeover by the Pozzo's has not worked out well for.

Got talent but not enough to force his way into our current team. Can see it being tough for Nos and Hoban when they get fit.

Wish the lad well

Changing gears, Matej Vydra came off the Udinese bench in last nights 3rd round qualifying for Udinese which they won 4-0 and Vydra scored the fourth goal.

Its up to him will he choose to be a bit player in Serie 'A' or playing for the best team in the championship!

Would make sense to us but he wont agree to go on a free until he knows he's got something else signed up ! If he went on a free now he might be unemployed in a month !

Exactly, I understand his position, he has to look after himself. Offer to pay up 3/4s of his contract?
Something along those lines, ultimately he is never going to play for us again.

A little surprised Thompson's not been snapped up.

I think Hoban will push Ekstrand when he's fully match fit. Not sure how much more we'll see of Nosworthy, he's going to be joining quite a long queue for central defence.

What I have seen of Adam I think he is a good attacking full back. I hope that the loan is a temporary thing and he will make the garde with us. Agrre with the comments about Hoban. Shame about his injury problems.

Hoban and Murray are good players but their appearances will be limited. They are not Zola's men. Harry's Bar thinks Hoban will be challenging Ekstrand for a place. In your dreams, mate. Hoban and Murray should be given their chances but will they?

More than likely Watford will continue to pay his wages while he is at Southend, The hope is he will do well and an offer from southend or another club will come in during the January transfer window and we may get a small fee.

I could not agree more.
Tough for all youngsters now in any field trying to make their way in life. Why throw in a contract when you do not have to?
Hopefully Southend will offer him a contract .

dont agree that Hoban is not one of "Zola's men" he was pretty much ever present from playing against Huddersfield which coincided with the start of our great form last season until he go injured. I think Zola has been pretty fair on picking players on merit and Hoban didn't do much wrong when he played.

Yeah and Zola has always rated Murray too. Both players will feature for Watford so long as they stay fit and on the straight and narrow.

Can't see it being too difficult for Hoban considering he was young player of the season. Imagine a back 3 of Angella, Hoban and Ekstrand though!

And I'm not too sure about Nosworthy as he was solid and in fairly good form when he got injured but at his age I don't know if hell fully recover to be match fit and ready to compete for places for another while
