Troy Deeney is one of those modern-day footballers who says what he thinks which usually results in a thoroughly entertaining interview. So when a national journalist foolishly asked the striker if he was “now ready” to lead the line following Matej Vydra’s departure, she was quickly put in her place.
“I felt I was the main man last year,” Deeney stated with confidence after Saturday’s 6-1 win over Bournemouth. “Matej scored a load of goals but he went through a three-month patch where he didn’t score and at times he wasn’t even playing whereas I consistently played and scored.
“That is not me being big headed, that is stating facts. I am the consistent one. Even though I might not score as many or look as good as other players when I score, I am consistently in the team.”
This is a small extract from an extensive interview with the striker that will be in tomorrow's Watford Observer, which costs 90p.
There will also be Gianfranco Zola's response to the reported interest in Deeney, a Reading preview, an in-depth assessment of Watford's new signing Essaid Belkalem plus much more.
