AUDIO: Gianfranco Zola says Watford will struggle to mount promotion charge if they play like the first half at Reading
12:20pm Monday 19th August 2013 in Sport
Watford boss Gianfranco Zola thinks the difference between Watford’s first and second-half performance at Reading on Saturday could be the difference between whether his side achieve promotion or not this season.
The Hornets trailed 2-0 at the break after a poor Hornets performance culminated in Adam Le Fondre scoring early on and Jem Karacan adding a second just before half time.
But Zola’s men showed why they should be in the promotion mix come the season’s end as a spirited second-half display saw Watford grab a hard-fought point in an exciting finale at the Madejski Stadium.
Davide Faraoni and in-form Troy Deeney scored before Diego Fabbrini completed the rousing comeback in the 89th minute to salvage an unlikely 3-3 draw and Zola knows his side will be punished if they perform like they did in the opening 45 minutes.
When asked if he expects both Watford and Reading to be in the promotion race, Zola replied: "If we play like we did in the second half then yes, if we play like we did in the first half then it will be a struggle."
