Cristian Battocchio scores for Italy but Watford teammate Jonathan Bond doesn't feature for England
Cristian Battocchio was on target for Italy Under-21s tonight but it was not enough to save his side from defeat in their opening UEFA European Championship game.
The Watford midfielder gave the Italians the lead six minutes before the interval in Rieti but opponents Belgium fought back to win 3-1 to go three points clear at the top of Group 9 after making it two wins out of two.
Meanwhile, Jonathan Bond was not involved in the match-day 18 as England Under-21s had 27 goal attempts in their Group 1 clash against Moldova at Reading’s Madejski Stadium, but had to settle for a 1-0 win through West Bromwich Albion striker Saido Berahino.
Former Hornets loan target Tom Carroll and Nathaniel Chalobah, who is being linked with a possible return to Vicarage Road, played the full 90 minutes in Gareth Southgate’s first game in charge of the Young Lions.
Battocchio and Bond are two of seven Watford players currently away on international duty, with Ikechi Anya, Essaid Belkalem, Lloyd Doyley, Sean Murray and Connor Smith all in line to feature for their respective countries at full or Under-21 level over the coming days.
