Watford’s spending on agents increased by just over £19,000 or 3.6 per cent for the year ending June 30, 2013, official figures released this morning show.

The Football League’s annual agents’ fees report reveals that for the period between July 1, 2012 to June 30, 2013 the Hornets spent £546,250 on 48 separate player transactions, making them the 11th highest spenders on agents’ fees in the Championship.

This compares to a figure of £527,187 for the previous year between July 1, 2011 and June 30, 2012, but in that period 66 separate player transactions were carried out.

The breakdown of player transactions for July 1, 2012 to June 30, 2013 was 22 new registrations/transfers, 13 updated contracts, six cancelled contracts and seven loans.

For the previous year, the numbers were 26 new registrations/transfers, 22 updated contracts, four cancelled contracts and 14 loans.

The report shows Blackpool were the only club in the Championship to not spend anything on agents for the year ending June 30, while the biggest spenders were Blackburn Rovers on £3,538,034. Five other clubs also spent more than £1m on agents’ fees: Cardiff City (£1,836, 193), Crystal Palace (£1,345,913), Leeds United (£1,283,284), Nottingham Forest (£1,208,850) and Wolverhampton Wanderers (£1,676,300).

Forest carried out the most transactions with 81 and Palace had the highest number of loans with 18.

The report shows a total of £21.5m was spent on agents’ fees during the 2012/13 season by Football League clubs – a decrease of £170,000 on the previous 12 months – with Championship sides accounting for £18.6m of the total.

A total of 1,341 player transactions were carried out by Championship clubs in 2012/13 of which 431 included the use of agent. This compares to 1,197 transactions and 422 using an agent the previous year.

Although the overall spend on agents’ fees decreased across the 72 Football League clubs, in the Championship it increased from £18,046,180 in 2011/12 to £18,567,305.
