Watford's Sean Murray and Connor Smith play for Republic of Ireland and Jonathan Bond unused England substitute
Sean Murray and Connor Smith both played tonight as Republic of Ireland Under-21s were beaten 4-0 at home by Germany in their UEFA European Championship qualifier.
Murray played the full 90 minutes, while his Watford and international teammate came on at half-time for his Under-21 debut after the Irish had found themselves 3-0 down inside 24 minutes.
The hosts were then reduced to ten men when Aston Villa’s Samir Carruthers was shown a second yellow card but the Germans were to score just once more as they made it two wins out of two to go top of Group 6.
The defeat leaves Ireland third in the table with three points from their two games.
Earlier, Jonathan Bond was an unused substitute as England Under-21s came from behind to earn a 1-1 draw at Group 1 leaders Finland.
West Bromwich Albion’s Saido Berahino followed his winner against Moldova last week with the equaliser to leave Gareth Southgate’s side third in their group, four points behind Finland but having played two games left.
England also finished the game with ten men following the dismissal of Liverpool’s Andre Wisdom.
