Watford target Nathaniel Chalobah joins Nottingham Forest on loan from Chelsea
Watford’s hopes of re-signing Nathaniel Chalobah are over – at least until January – after it was confirmed the England Under-21 international had joined Championship rivals Nottingham Forest on loan late last night.
Gianfranco Zola has been open about his wish to bring back the Chelsea midfielder but he has now moved to the City Ground until January 15.
The Hornets’ head coach told the Watford Observer yesterday that Chalobah was keen to return to the Vicarage Road side, for whom he scored five goals in 43 appearances last season, but it was understood the Blues were always favouring a move to a club willing to pick up most, if not all of his wages.
The 18-year-old is believed to be on in the region of £30,000 to £35,000 a week after signing a new five-year deal at Stamford Bridge in the summer.
Speaking yesterday, Zola said: “Everyone would love to have Chalobah here but it is not going to happen immediately, it is difficult.
“We have a budget and there are financial problems – the boy certainly wants to come over here and we want him here but there are some other issues that have to be agreed.
“But he is keen to come, he would like to come back and of course we would like him back but there are other things that need to be put in place.”
Watford had previously hoped to sign Tottenham Hotspur’s Tom Carroll on loan but he joined Queens Park Rangers on a season-long loan on deadline day, but the Hornets have earmarked other targets as Zola seeks to strengthen his midfield options.
