AUDIO: Chris Hughton believes Norwich City deserved to beat Watford in League Cup
10:48am Wednesday 25th September 2013 in Sport
Norwich City manager Chris Hughton praised Watford and their performance last night but believes his side still deserved to progress in the League Cup tie.
The Hornets were comfortable leading 2-0 in the second half before a stunning strike by Josh Murphy pulled one back and then Gary Hooper scored with seconds left in injury time.
Hooper went on to score the deciding goal in the second half of injury time to ensure Norwich progressed.
Hughton said: "It was a really good cup tie and Watford are a really good side who will be right up there at the end of the season. They play a system which suits them, that they work on very well but I have no doubt that over the period of the game we were the better side. Particularly in the period of the first half, I thought we had a real good spell and found ourselves 1-0 down which was really disappointing.
"They always threatened because they are a good side but over the period of the game I thought we deserved it."
He continued: "I knew once we had that first goal we would have great momentum but when it is that late, on most occasions you don't manage to do it and it usually takes something special. It certainly wasn't a case of wearing them down because they are a good side who have good defenders but you just need that one bit of fortune or the one cross which is in the exact area. And Gary's movement was excellent to get the header.
"It was nothing short of what we deserved and it was a very good cup tie."
