Chelsea and Watford midfielder Josh McEachran's injury not serious

New Watford signing Josh McEachran expects to return to match fitness soon and confirmed he went off last night with a back spasm.

McEachran, who joined the Hornets from Chelsea on Friday, made his Watford debut against Norwich City last night but was forced off after 39 minutes with a back problem.

After the match, the 20-year-old told the Watford Observer: "I had a back spasm about two or three weeks ago and it cleared up but tonight I landed and twisted funny and it went again so hopefully it won't be too long (until he returns)."

McEachran spent pre-season with the Chelsea first team but last night was his first outing since he returned from a minor ankle injury last month.

He said: "My ankle is fine now. I get it strapped every game but I've had no problems since the injury so it is good."

"My fitness levels are maybe not properly where they should be in terms of being 100 per cent," McEachran added. "I could last 90 minutes but I will keep trying hard to push myself so I will become ready."

On the England Under-21 international's debut, Watford head coach and Chelsea legend Gianfranco Zola said: "It was brief but I saw some interesting things. He was good with the ball and confident but there are some things we need to improve. But he is a player who can give us something good I’m sure."

There will be an interview with McEachran in this Friday's Watford Observer.

Fingers crossed, last thing we would want is the first month of his loan spell spent on the sidelines.

What do you think? I thought that our almost second string were awful in the first half great for parts of the second half but few that give me confidence that they are yet up to the first team standards. That said, the likes of Ekstrom coming back from injury. Hope we stuff Wigan.

Initially i thought he went down with cramp - he was puffing hard after 10 minutes and took his sock ties off when Murray did thayt free kick in the first half, that went straihght into their wall. Looks a long way from 90 minutes to me - maybe mid/end of October

I think "awful" is a bit harsh. The first 20 mins we lacked movement and ideas when we had the ball. Norwich kept the ball better than us and it didn't help that we relentlessly gave away the ball. However, we looked solid at the back. Battachio and Murray grew into the game, Smith held his own and is a bright prospect. 20 mins in the 2nd half we were fantastic and ripped a premiership team apart, now that's pretty impressive considering we had a load of young players out there who haven't had the opportunity to get a string of games under their belt.

Were you even at the game? Our team was superb, with a win cruelly taken away from us. The midfield battled all game; the defence stood strong and we were unlucky not to grab an equaliser in the last few minutes.

Many players hadn't played a full 90 mins this season so to last 120 mins was great credit to them.
