Lloyd Doyley believes the current Watford starting XI is the best he has played in
Hornets stalwart Lloyd Doyley believes the current Watford starting XI is the best he has ever played in and also says the squad is stronger than the one that secured promotion to the Premier League in 2006.
During his 13 years in the first team, the defender has helped the Golden Boys reach the top flight and suffered the disappointment of falling back into the Championship.
There is no player more qualified to make an assessment on the current Watford side and Doyley was full of praise for Gianfranco Zola’s squad.
“I think this is the best team I have played in,” said Doyley. “When we were promoted in 2006 it was a good team. It was a good team with a lot of individuals who could change the game like Marlon King and Ashley Young. But I think we have technically a better team now and a better squad.”
A strong squad means more competition for places. After more than a decade of consistent performances and loyal service, Doyley would be forgiven for thinking he’d be one of the first names on the team sheet.
However, he remains motivated and determined to prove he deserves a place in the starting XI and in the Premier League.
He said: “I just want to play every week. That's what motivates me. I want to be in the team and I want to play in the Premier League again. We all do.
“We were very disappointed last year but we have another new team that is improving. Hopefully by the end of the season we will be in the top two.”
Doyley has made eight appearances for Watford this campaign and played 90 minutes as the Hornets defeated Wigan Athletic 1-0 at the weekend.
Zola’s side have conceded eight fewer goals than at the same point last season and Doyley believes the team have improved defensively this season.
Speaking before the Blackburn defeat, he explained: “Last year we won a lot of games 3-1 and 4-2 but this year we have tightened up a bit more. Gabriele Angella has been awesome.
“We have put in a lot of work on defending and by the looks of it, it is working. With three wins in a row it is good for us, that is consistency, but I’d like to make it ten in a row.”
