Watford Ladies Reserves beaten by Queens Park Rangers in final pre-season friendly
6:50pm Thursday 3rd October 2013 in Sport
Watford Ladies Reserves begin their WSL Development League campaign with a trip to Reading on Sunday having rounded off their pre-season with a 1-0 defeat against Queens Park Rangers Ladies.
A slow start to the contest by the Hornets was punished by the visitors who took an early lead. Watford goalkeeper Hollie Augustus then produced two good stops to ensure her side went into the interval just one goal behind.
The second period saw the Golden Girls take control and Kelly Gallagher fired over from inside the QPR area after some excellent link-up play on the right wing involving Ashleigh Deacon and Zoe Teasdale.
Millie Gulley then volleyed straight into the keeper’s hands from a Gallagher corner and Deacon forced the Rangers shot stopper into another save after getting free on the right-hand side of the area.
The Hornets were unable to find an equaliser but will be encouraged by their second-half display.
Meanwhile, Watford Ladies Development Team enjoyed a 6-0 home win against Tottenham Hotspur Ladies Development side in the London & SE Regional Women’s League Division One.
Kemina Webber netted five times in the win, while Sian Fisken also struck in the victory.
There were international honours for Sarah Wiltshire as she helped Wales defeat Belarus 1-0 in their 2015 World Cup qualifying game.
Wiltshire then helped loan club Cardiff City defeat Chesham United Ladies 5-0 in the FA Women’s Premier League South, with Hornets teammates Jo Wilson and Chloe Gunn both on the opposition side.
Elsewhere, Fliss Gibbons has been selected for England Under-23s, while goalkeeper Lauren Davey is on the stand-by list.
Gibbons helped Gillingham defeat Portsmouth 3-0 and Kate Natkiel was in the Brighton side which beat West Ham United Ladies 1-0.
Megan Wynne came on as substitute to make her debut for Tottenham Ladies but it wasn’t enough to stop Coventry recording a 3-0 win.
Ellie Butterwick tasted her first defeat as an on-loan MK Dons player as they lost 1-0 to Ipswich Town Ladies in the South East Combination League.
It was a good weekend for Watford’s youth sides with several teams enjoying high-scoring victories.
The Hornets’ Under-16s thrashed Garston Ladies Diamonds 12-0 with Zoe Cohen (4), Anna Re (2), Megan Warner (2) Aimee Durn, Sofie Georgiou, Beth McKenna and Isabel Stainsby all on target for the victors.
The Under-16s Wasps didn’t fare as well however as they were beaten 12-1 by Hitchin Belles.
Watford Ladies Harts lost 4-0 to Bury in the Under-14 age category. Emma Kerber was named player-of-the-match by her teammates.
The Under-12 Harts defeated St Albans 10-0 thanks to four goals from Amy Ryan, a hat-trick from Roma Agnihotri, a brace from Jemimah Rose and a single from Lola Forsyth.
The Under-12 Hornets smashed Hitchin Belles 11-0. Charli Connor found the net four times, Kelsey Mugford bagged a brace, Ciara Purdue scored a hat-trick and there were also goals from Rebecca Lovelace and Eloise Waring.
The Under-11s suffered a disappointing 3-1 defeat away to Denham Wildcats with Kayra Karakas getting the consolation.
There was disappointment for the Under-18s as they lost 8-0 to Islington Borough.
