Tring Athletic defeated Bedford 4-3 on penalties in the Challenge Cup
5:40pm Thursday 10th October 2013 in Sport
Tring Athletic are through to the second round of the Challenge Trophy after a penalty shoot-out victory against Bedford.
The game ended 1-1 in normal time. Graham Hall had put Tring ahead but one minute later the home side were level when Ash Kersey struck.
With neither side able to break the deadlock, the contest was decided from the spot and it was Athletic who held their nerve, winning 4-3.
In Premier Division action on Saturday, Tring recorded a 3-2 home victory against Oxhey Jets.
Athletic looked in control of the game after just ten minutes as Chris Salmon and then Hall both scored for the hosts.
But Jets battled back and they reduced the deficit shortly before the interval when Wayne Gladdy turned neatly on the edge of the box and finished well.
Oxhey then levelled in the second period as Chris Killer’s fierce strike took a deflection and found the net.
Tring didn’t let that setback affect them however and they retook the lead when Chris Vardy was pulled down in the area and Hall converted the resultant penalty to seal victory for his side.
On Tuesday, Jets were beaten 3-0 by Harefield United in the Premier Division.
A brace from Paolo Cicero and one from Gary James was enough for the hosts.
