Gianfranco Zola says Watford’s injury problems were not to blame for the Hornets’ 3-0 defeat against Yeovil Town with the Italian adding “we had more than enough, with due respect, to beat Yeovil”.

Lloyd Doyley, Ikechi Anya, Almen Abdi, Tommie Hoban, Essaid Belkalem, Josh McEachran and Manuel Almunia all missed the game due to injury and illness.

But the Watford head coach was adamant his side was strong enough to overcome the Glovers at Vicarage Road.

When asked if the injury problems were to blame, Zola said: “Today it didn’t play any part. Against Bolton you could say that but not today because we had more than enough, with due respect, to beat Yeovil.”

Byron Webster nodded the visitors in front from a Liam Davis corner in first half stoppage time as, once again, Watford were punished for dealing with a set-piece.

“I am disappointed,” Zola admitted. “To be honest I am disappointed with the referee as well. It was 20 seconds over the time but he said he had to let them take it.

“When the time is over, it is over. So that corner should not have been taken in the first place. But I am not pleased about that (conceding from set-pieces).

“It is another game where I don’t see a goal coming and then it comes, so it is tough. The second goal was disappointing because it came from another mistake we made and that is not good. We do not need that at the moment.”
