Watford faced reigning league champions Liverpool at Vicarage Road.
John McClelland scored a rare goal with a near-post header midway through the first half, and the Hornets went on to dominate.
John Barnes, who was to move to Anfield the following summer, sealed the victory with a magnificent solo goal.
Liverpool boss Kenny Dalglish described Watford goalkeeper Tony Coton's performance as "outstanding".
