Saturday was horrendous, I was once attacked by a seal in the freezing Atlantic Ocean (true story), and honestly it was a more uplifting experience.

I have enjoyed bouts of flu more than that 3-0 defeat to Yeovil Town. I would rather take a punch  from Anthony Joshua rather than go through that again.

The misery wasn't just because it was the fourth home defeat on the trot. It wasn't just because we looked like we had no idea how to score but because it felt like the end.

A terrible finale to an era of Watford FC that has been such an absolute delight. During the death of the second GT era, and the unfortunate demise of Boothroyd, there was the exact same sense of sadness and frustration around The Vic.

None of us want rid of Gianfranco Zola (I'd guess, deep down, this goes for even the keyboard warriors calling for his head),but after Yeovil it seemed impossible to just go on, something had to change.

So to Burnley, last night. There seemed to be a change and thankfully it was not in the form of a new head coach, it was a change in attitude to going about a tough Championship game.

Our dear little friend went back to basics, he started afresh and he got a cracking result.

After what has been going on, a 0-0 away at Burnley somehow feels better than a 2-3 or 3-4 win might have done.

It surely (well, hopefully) signals that the silliness has ended, that we won't just play pretty football then shrug at just how we ended up three goals down.

That we will do the dirty stuff, the gritty stuff, that we will kick opposition players, break sweat, come off a pitch coated head to toe in mud.

If we can learn how to do the basics, to stop teams, everything else will surely just fall into place.

We can complete 43 passes in a row, we can embarrass defenders with our fancy pants trickery, but you have to do the simple things first, or all that is pointless.

After Yeovil the stats showed Watford had 65% of the possession, 27 shots compared to Yeovil's nine.

Against Burnley we dropped to just 43% of the possession, just ten shots. It's a funny sort of progress, but I would argue it’s progress none the less.

Come on Gianfranco, we're all right behind you, we know you can turn this around - let's go get revenge for last year against Leeds and then start looking up that table again…
