Watford travelled to Highbury to face an Arsenal side under the management of Don Howe, Terry Neill having been sacked the previous day.

Raphael Meade's hat-trick won the game for the home side, Mo Johnston getting the Hornets' consolation in a 3-1 defeat, their first in the league to the Gunners.

Watford's teenage left-back Neil Price was dismissed by referee Clive Thomas.
