Watford Ladies were crowned champions of the National FA Fives tournament held at Wembley Stadium on Saturday after beating Bushey 1-0 in the final.

After triumphs at both the county and regional competitions earlier this year, the Golden Girls scooped the top prize as Sarah Wiltshire scored seven goals including the winner in the final.

The talented striker was later named Player of the Tournament.

After a brief tour of the iconic venue in the morning, Watford’s opening group game was against Bushey and the match finished 1-1 with Wiltshire claiming the Hornets’ goal.

The second group game was against A-Town Ladies, who won the Midlands Regional Tournament to qualify and a slow start from Watford saw their opponents race into a 3-0 lead.

Kate Natkiel and Wiltshire both got on the scoresheet to reduce the deficit but it wasn’t enough to prevent A-Town taking all three points.

Needing a win and an improved goal difference from their final group match, Watford romped to a 5-2 victory over London-based The Mix.

The goals from Natkiel (2), Wiltshire, Jo Wilson and Renee Hector were enough to secure a semi-final place against Itchen Athletic, who Watford had beaten in the regional final in June.

The Golden Girls rose to the occasion and produced their best performance of the day to win 5-1 thanks to a hat-trick from Wiltshire and further goals from Natkiel and Wilson.

Their opponents in the final were Bushey and as the draw earlier in the tournament suggested it would be, the game was tight.

Wiltshire was the star of the show again however as she put Watford ahead but goalkeeper Hollie Augustus also had to be in fine form, producing some impressive saves to seal a 1-0 win and clinch the title for Watford.

Watford Ladies FA Fives manager Steve Edwards, said: “We didn’t get off to the best of starts and we were a bit complacent in the second game and slow to get going.

“We spoke as a group before the third game and realised we were one game away from going home and agreed that we could work a lot harder as a team.

“The players’ reaction from then on was fantastic and the last three matches were as good as it gets.

“All the squad played their part today and they deserve this success - noone will ever be able to take the fact that they are Wembley champions away from them. It’s a great day for the club.”
