Having never looked troubled by Oxford United in a second division game at Vicarage Road, Watford conceded a bizarre late penalty.
Oxford's Nigel Cassidy made one of a succession of attempts to obstruct Andy Rankin's drop kick, and was subsequently baulked by Watford's on-loan Hull City defender Bill Baxter with the ball already on the halfway line.
Derek Clarke's spot kick squeezed under Rankin and trickled over the line to give the visitors an unlikely victory as the sorry Hornets tumbled towards the third division.
