Watford entertained Manchester United in the third round of the FA Cup at Vicarage Road.
Dutch midfielder Jan Lohman, on only his fourth start for the Hornets, scored the only goal of the game to send the home side through.
John Barnes' performance in central midfield against Bryan Robson and Ray Wilkins was his first eye-catching venture into the national spotlight.
United manager Ron Atkinson conceded: "We were second best in every department, particularly in midfield. Robson was a joke and Wilkins was back to his worst old ways again."
