Sun Postal Sports dealt Kings Langley a heavy blow in the race for the Spartan South Midlands Division One title with a 2-1 win at home on Saturday.

Ashley Lewis’ goal 11 minutes from time proved decisive for Sun, who are now second in the table, three points behind Bedford but with three games in hand over the league leaders.

Kings are still very much in the hunt at the top but the defeat leaves them in fourth, seven points off the summit albeit with four games in hand.

The visitors took the game to their opponents early on and Connor Toomey almost broke the deadlock as his strike crashed off the underside of the crossbar.

Sun weathered the early storm however and it was the hosts who took the lead as Nathan Pooley's powerful shot beat Ant Ladyman from an acute angle.

Kings responded postively and forced a number of corners but efforts from Dean Hitchcock and Tom Carter were both blocked.

The pressure was eventually rewarded just before half-time as Tom Carter’s run into the box drew a foul and Gary Connolly converted the penalty to make it 1-1.

Sun improved after the interval and looked the more likely to take the lead.

It wasn't until the 79th minute however that the decisive goal came as a free-kick was swung into the box and Lewis claimed the crucial touch, heading into the net.

Both teams' next match is against Baldock Town. Sun play the eighth-placed side tomorrow while Kings Langley have to wait until January 11.
