Watford faced second division Preston North End in the third round of the FA Cup.
The visitors boasted the intimidating figure of Alex James in their ranks, but the Blues ran out 1-0 winners.
Frank Smith, who successfully man-marked James throughout, played Tommy Barnett through to score the winning goal.
Film of the game was replayed at a packed cinema in Watford after the event.
