Watford midfielder Connor Smith has joined League One Gillingham on loan until the end of the season.

Smith played 45 minutes in Watford's FA Cup tie with Bristol City on Saturday in the unfamiliar role of right wing back, due to several injuries, but the club have been keen to loan out the midfielder for the last couple of months.

The 20-year-old, whose contract expires in 2016 with the club having the option of another year, is a versatile player who started his Watford career as an attacking or wide midfielder and forward but this season has been used by former boss Gianfranco Zola in a holding midfield role.

Smith has made three starts and two substitute outings for the Golden Boys this season. The Republic of Ireland Under-21 international, who came runner-up in Sky's Football's Next Star, has made five starts and seven substitute appearances for the Hornets in total and enjoyed a successful loan spell at non-league Wealdstone during the 2011/12 campaign, where he made 32 appearances.

Gillingham, who won the League Two title last season, are managed by Peter Taylor and are 14th in League One.

He hasn't been awful as such, he's still young and not quite ready for championship football yet, hence why he went out on loan

Twitter used to be " bloke down the pub told me" ie Twits. Why would Doyley walk away mid season when he know's he would get a better deal and a better choice in the summer.

As per usual you have got no idea. We need players in midfield that can break down opposition midfield play. Connor Smith did that unlike a lot of our star players playing now. He was by no means a finished article but definitely showed promise. And if you bothered to check, funnily enough the three matches that he started this season - we won them all. No fancy footwork just solid football.

Stupid comment. Why would we sell an England U21 international keeper who has played well when he's come in for us and shown great potential? What a moronic comment.

Good move for Connor. I still think he has potential to be a decent Championship player in a couple of years. A good bits and pieces player who will do a job maybe as a squad player, but teams do need those types too. Of course, if the Pozzo project at Watford goes well we might be in the Premier League by then, so the club might grow quicker than he does. Sensible loan imo so as to get regular game time, which he will not with us. I wish him every success at Gillingham under a good coach.

As regards Doyley, why get rid of a solid defender who reads the game well, covers well, is reasonably quick and quicker than the others we have. He is loyal and gives 100%. His distribution, whilst obviously not his strength improved under Rodgers and again under Zola. I can see no advantage in selling him now, which with his contract running out in the summer will be for peanuts.

With Nosworthy, Hall and Hoban, all injury prone or injured who would be the third central defender alongside Angella and Ekstrand. Bekelam ? who is also unproven at Championship level.
