Adam Thompson has completed his move to Southend United and the Watford Observer understands the Hornets allowed the player to leave on a free transfer.

Thompson only had six months left on his Watford contract and was surplus to requirements at the Championship club.

The 21-year-old has made 11 appearances for The Shrimpers since he joined the club on loan at the start of the season.

Saturday's 4-1 victory over Millwall was the last game of Thompson's Southend loan but after the match manager Phil Brown confirmed the clubs had spoken about the defender joining permanently.

Thompson broke into the Watford team as a 17-year-old under Malky Mackay whilst still a second-year scholar.

He made 11 appearances for the Hornets during the second half of the 2010/11 season before spending most of the following campaign at Brentford during two spells, when he made 22 outings.

Thompson began last season at Watford, starting in the League Cup defeat to Bradford City, before an unsuccessful two-match stint at Wycombe Wanderers, who sacked Gary Waddock during the Hornets academy graduate's stay at Adams Park.

Two more Watford run-outs followed before injury ended a loan spell at League Two Barnet after just one appearance.

Gianfranco Zola gave Thompson another two substitute outings before the end of last season but the young defender was not given a squad number in the summer.

As a six foot lad with decent pace and a good touch I always thought if he bulked up a bit he would be ideal for a right sided centre back role as opposed to a full back.

Duno if he has bulked up, but think he has alot of ability, he is better than Hodson for instance who is playing in the division above him now.
No wonder other clubs were in for Thompson, good luck to him.

He scored a few vital goals when he first broke into the team. I was surprised he never flourished at Brentford having bigged him up to one of their season ticket holders in my office. If Thompson goes for a free how much will we have to pay to get rid of Jenkins before the 31st?

Good Lad; would probably have been in and around the first team pre-Pozzo's; but the standard now has been raised, so a good move for Adam to get first team League football. Good Luck to him.

Yes very good deal for Southend. For AT himself a good chance to get first team football at a young enough age to get noticed and signed by Div 1 or lower Champ team in the future.

Very good for Southend to get him on a FREE transfer. Surely he was worth a fee?

Hope there are some add-ons in the deal, for I feel young Thompson is a fine prospect and we will hear a lot more of him in the next few years.
