Hornets head coach Beppe Sannino was pleased with the debut performance of Watford’s new signing Alexander Merkel against Reading despite the creative midfielder being sent off in injury time.

The 21-year-old started his first competitive match since March on Saturday at the back of Watford’s midfield three and grew into the game in the second half.

An encouraging performance was somewhat soured however in the 94th minute when Merkel was shown a straight red card for a reckless tackle on Reading’s Nick Blackman.

Sannino admitted the sending off was “a shame” but was pleased overall with Merkel’s display.

“Yes [I was pleased overall] - apart from the red card, he showed me a lot of desire and he worked hard but in the first half the team wasn’t performing well so he was exposed,” Sannino said.

“He reflected the performance of the whole team - his first half was not helped by his teammates.

“He’s a lad who has good technical quality but we shouldn’t expect Merkel to win the game for us.”

Merkel is suspended for three matches including tomorrow's FA Cup replay against Bristol City and the next two Championship games against Bournemouth and Birmingham City.

Not impressed with Merkel at all, but it is far too early to give a really accurate assessment.

I do not think we miss him as we beat both Bristol City and Bournemouth this week.

Merkel was excellent, grew as the game went on. First game in 10 months, out of position and his debut for a new club too yet still looked class.

How will he be available for tomorrow though? Does the ban not kick in for 7 days?

Also, why are my comments on other threads showing up as Accepted then vanishing minutes later? They weren't malicious, absuive or incorrect, just comments like this one!

Solid. Intuitive. Industrious. Slightly better than many of his team mates most of the time. A decent debut overall. What exactly did you expect? A blonde Lampard/Suarez/Ronal
do hybrid?

I think you're getting him mixed up with McGugan!

Hope he is suspended for the cup tomorrow night. If we win then he only misses one league game as Brum would be rearranged.

He wont miss Birmingham Game if we beat Bristol City. Birmingham game is scheduled for FA Cup round 4 weekend so will be postponed. Its important to win tomorrow so that we can make it happen, then he misses only one league game, and however much we may want an FA cup run, it would be very naive to believe that we can win it.

Merkel not really a defensive midfielder. Our midfield looked light weight and highlights that we missed not having Thorne there to be the link between defence and midfield. Merkel did look good on the ball but is unlikely to shine playing deep - he looks like he should be proving the link up play to the forwards.

I see per BBC we are talking to Derek Boateng of Fulham so it doesn't look like Merkel will have to pay the defensive role for much longer.

Very impressed with Merkel apart from sending off which rubbed salt in the wound of another home defeat. Our midfield were slow out of the blocks on Saturday and took 30 minutes to get any control. Murray who has been good over last few games was having a stinker but improved aftrr the break. But Merkel like Bellerin looks class despite youth. Merkel obviously likes to tackle and he broke up several attacks in first half. Loads of industry and neat passing. We need more consistency from the players. Tomorrow night we need a good performance in order to get our mojo back. Although mid-table looks our lot this season no reason why we cannot improve and enjoy it. Please WFC crowd show more passion and support - things are surely not that bad? Luv the Horns.

so what does this mean for Mggugan? i would play Merkel, Boateng and Murray, until Abdi is fit and then we have an awseome midfield
