Watford played reigning league champions Nottingham Forest at the City Ground in the first leg of the club's first League Cup semi-final.
Luther Blissett gave the Hornets the lead, but Forest responded and were 2-1 ahead when England goalkeeper Peter Shilton blocked Roger Joslyn's effort, Blissett struck the rebound against the post and the home side broke for a third to complete the scoring.
In replacing Keith Cassells, substitute Alan Mayes made the last of his 155 appearances for the club.
