Watford beat Newcastle United 1-0 in an FA Cup third round, third replay at Vicarage Road.
The tie had prompted the Hornets' involvement in a second replay for the fifth consecutive season two days earlier, a feat not matched before or since.
Including three periods of extra time, it had taken seven-and-a-half hours of football to separate the sides.
The decisive moment was an own goal from Newcastle centre-back Glenn Roeder who deflected Rick Holden's shot into his own net after Tony Coton had been instrumental in keeping the Magpies out.
Roeder was to join the Hornets the following summer, and later manage the club.
