Almen Abdi could return to the Watford squad for tomorrow's FA Cup third round replay against Bristol City

Watford Observer: Picture: Holly Cant Picture: Holly Cant

Hornets boss Beppe Sannino says Almen Abdi is in contention for a place in Watford’s squad for tomorrow’s FA Cup third round replay against Bristol City.

The Swiss midfielder has made just six appearances for the Golden Boys this season but hasn’t featured since the end of August after suffering with Plantar Fasciitis.

The nature of the injury has meant the Hornets have been unable to put a timeframe on Abdi’s return but the 27-year-old could feature against the Robins according to Sannino.

The Watford head coach said: “I am considering Abdi who may take a little part. I am not sure yet but he is in contention.”

He continued: “Last season the Watford fans chose Abdi as the best player of the season. He was very important last season and we are waiting for him.

"We would like to have him back as soon as possible because he can give us quality and experience. So we will see if he could be on the bench tomorrow. We have to see how he reacts to the training sessions."

Marco Cesarini, the Hornets’ head of medical, stressed Abdi is in a “transitional period” but said there were several positives.

However, he added: “We have to be careful and take it step by step.”

Three players are unable to feature against the Robins. Arsenal loanee Hector Bellerin is ineligible while Alexander Merkel, who is suspended, and Mathias Ranegie were not register for the first tie and are unable to play in the replay.

Ikechi Anya has recovered from the groin strain that has ruled him out for the past two weeks and Daniel Pudil and Davide Faraoni are also fully fit.

Jonathan Bond has shaken off an illness which kept him out of the weekend defeat to Reading but Marco Cassetti will be absent with a knee problem and Sannino said: “He has an assessment tomorrow but we are confident he will not be out long term.

"He has a heavy contusion on his knee and there is an issue with the joint.”

Essaid Belkalem (ankle) and Tommie Hoban (ankle) are both long-term absentees but the Academy graduate is closing in on a return to action and could feature in the Under-21 Premier League Cup match against Reading on Thursday.

Excellent news. Hopefully Abdi's return will give players and fans alike a boost. It might even encourage a few more people to come along on Tuesday to the game., to see him in action and welcome him back. Let's pray he's over his injury nightmare and stays fit.

Welcome back our man, Almen - we've missed you!

I doubt it as it says he may play some part - and it certainly looks like he wont be playing the whole game. As good a player as he is I cant imagine many people paying to see him sit on the bench for the most of the game!

I hope you're wrong too, but his imminent return has been forecast so many times .... Would be a bad thing to force it and then lose him for another extended period. Maybe they are just thinking - sooner or later he is going to have to try to play through it. I'm quite sure it ain't going to sell any tickets so I'd leave that thought aside.

No, admittedly, it was a much better 2nd half but to win you must get the ball in the net. "Better" counts for nothing if you don't take your chances and I couldn't see one player out there that stood half a chance of scoring on Saturday.

Fantastic news if he does return tonight even if only for a few minutes - cannot underestimate how much he has been missed.

When he got injured we were five points off top! I know he is only one man but a fully fit and firing Abdi along with Merkel and (hopefully) an experienced new DMF would be a massive improvement.

Not too fussed about Belkalem or Cassetti to be honest but also be great to have Hoban back, he is a quality player.

When Abdi got injured we were 5 points off the top after only 5 games ... and we're now 24 points off the top after 24 games.
I'm not underestimating Abdi's talent as a footballer but let's not kid ourselves that IF he does return, it will solve all sour problems, as it won't.
As posted above, Anya has been missed greatly, and we need to be able to finish the chances that Abdi will create. Let's consolidate this season, find our best system and our core players, and prepare for a play off / promotion push next season if we can keep our important players injury free. I see our core players for next season as Angella and Ekstrand, Merkel and Abdi, Anya, FF and Deeney. Throw in a keeper, another defender or 2 depending on formation and a decent DM and on paper that's a strong team, with a very strong bench too with the other squad players available. COYH

Agree with your first sentiment BUT I do believe that we have equally missed Vydra, Hogg and Chalobah (even if I wasn't his greatest fan).

THe balance of the whole team last season was just so much better. This season we appear to have gone back to our pre-Dyche days.

Good news, if true, we have missed Abdi's passing, vision, scoring, calmness, dead ball taking ability (have we scored from a corner since his injury ?), leadership and much more...

Hopefully, he will play some part, but it will take him a few games to get up to speed and I am sure he will be tentative at times. Lets just give him a 100% and noisy welcome back.

As regards putting a few on the gate. How many 500, 50, 10? No disrepect to Almen but he is hardly Messi,Gazza or George Best. I think some are taking cynicism a tad far.
@Stoney77: I have no issue with not going up this season or challenging, unlike some supporters I've learnt over many (mostly awful) years that things are very rarely smooth when it comes to Watford but at least with some quality players coming into the team the building blocks can be laid.

To the core of a team you mentioned potentially for next season I'd add Faraoni (for me one of the best signings along with Angella in the summer) and Bond as well as Hoban. Add that elusive 'proper' DMF and we have the nucleus of a very decent team.

@Hornet Cornet: Yep, the WHOLE midfield last year, when it clicked, was way ahead of what we currently have but hopefully with Abdi & Merkel we can get close to that level again.

I just hope we don't get another major upheaval in the summer :-(
